Does someone have an out-of-the-box method (w/o using iLogic) to push a Custom iProperty from an ipt file into an iam file?
Is this possible?

Yes it is.
Have them both in another assembly and use the BOM to copy the properties. In BOM click on "Add Custom Properties Column" and type the name of the ipropetie in the part.
Drag the corner as in excel or use copy paste to populate the other parts in BOM. Even if others don't have this ipropertie it will get created and it's value as well automatically.
Thanx Adrian.
I guess I was not clear in my question (as usual!).
What I want to do is derive a non-numeric (= a text value) Custom Property from an ipt into an iam, so I can use it in the iam's iProperties, so it shows up in the BOM for that iam.
Can't seem to figure that one out.
Can it be done?
If so, how?
Thanx!
design assistant allows you to copy (one time push) properties between files.
In design assistant see "tools".."copy design properties"
Still thining.... but you want to link a text Custom Iproperty from a part into an assemlby. When you change the part propertiy the assembly to change as well. I don't think it's possbile....without ilogic.
You could have used link form the assembly parameters but you have 2010 so text parameters were not available in 2010, they were introduced with ilogic.
Try using an excel to link them both.
Thanx McG.
I really want to make it a 'living' connection that works like all the other iProperties.
Thanx Adrian, that's what I thought.
Hmm ... any idea where I can get the iLogic that works for 2010.
I believe this was the first year they added it, but only on subscription.
I don't have subscription but have been willing to pay a nominal fee for it to try it out and see if it does the few things I'm interested in accomplishing.
Nobody seems to want to accomodate me at AD or otherwise.
Maybe there's an add-in that does the same thing that one of the developers in this forum has created?
I still want to try iLogic, but am not interested in paying for a program upgrade just to test to see if the app does what I need.
Any ideas where I may be able to get it cheap, or something like it that works w/iProperties?
Incidentally: What app do you use to do your screen videos, like the above post?

Wait a minute.... A BOM for an iam should not include anything from that iam.. A bom just shows information about the components (ipts and sub iams) of a top level iam.. and has nothing about the iam in it.. Why do you want something about the iam in the bom.. Maybe you want to push something from an ipt into a subassembly bom so it will show in the top level bom.
Can you give a better example of exactly what you are trying to do?
You are correct, first year 2010 by subscription. Try and email Scott Sheppard at Autodesk Lab, http://labs.blogs.com/. That's where the technology preview was.
The video is really animated images, so .. gif.
try searching on google for one you like, I use screentogif
https://screentogif.codeplex.com/
? Have you tryied the EXCEL link?
Adrian,
Thanx for the contact and the links.
I figured it was a gif, but didn't know which program was 'preferred' for the task.
No, I haven't tried Excel yet.
I really don't want to drive these parts w/Excel, unless I create an entire system for it.
Right now I'm trying to keep it simple, and to get all my CC parts and structural members set-up for small structural projects.
If you have a system you use Excel for in structural projects, I'd be intersted in learning your process-flow, if you care to share it w/me.
I'm doing all this as R&D 'from scratch', so there's a lotta work involved, as I'm sure you know.
McG,
You're right, and I would need to further clarify so you get what I'm saying.
Here's one example:
I use an assembly file for fastener combos (such as a bolt, wahers and nut).
That iam is used in another iam w/the members it bolts together, which makes it a fastener-subassembly.
The bolt ipt iProps are Linked to the fastener iam file via the Parameters, so I can auto-drive the iam BOM values w/the relevant ipt file iProps.
I do that by Linking both numeric and text ipt Custom iProps into the fastener iam.
However, some of the iProps in the iam iProps need to be text Custom iProps.
But I can't figure out how to make that happen w/bare-bones Inventor.
Does that clarify?
Adrian,
Scott took care of me.
Thanx for helping.
Gotta learn iLogic and see how it works w/this stuff.
Do you know of any good tutorials out there that'll get me up and running?
Thanx again!
I don't use excel other than iparts, ifeatures but it's the only way I can think of to transfer things between one to the other.
Correction, ilogic first came with 2009.
