Custom iParts Part number

Why is it that on custom iparts, the part number that is displayed on the
BOM is ALWAYS the name of the ipart parent and not the filename? On any
other parts (iparts or normal parts), the value in the part number is the
same as the filename of the part.

Is there anyway to have the custom iparts behave like the other parts?

Are you specifying the part number for each iPart member in your table? If so what is your syntax?

When I insert the iPart into the assembly, I am
given a chance to assign the filename.  If I do this or not it doesn't
matter, the part name of the parent is shown in the bill of materials, not the
part name of the part that was just produced.

You can explicitly set in the iPart table the part number, description, and file name of each instance. You need to do this to get the behavior you are looking for.

What I am not sure about is what to put in the
filename column since this is a custom iPart.  With it being a custom iPart
the filename can be different each time it is inserted.

These are parts that will allow the user to input a
value (usually length) and the filename.  Here is a link for an
example.

Try inserting this into an assembly.

Well I think you can put any thing, for example 'SaddamBush'
in that coloumn and copy it in all the cells, as you are going to change the name any way with each new instance.

Well I guess maybe you wanted a more elegant solution but just make the part number a prompted value like the length is.

Now for the next question, am I the only one that gets a quick exit when I use this in an assembly using semi-isolated?

The filename is a prompted value.

I don't get a quick exit when using the
iChannel-ASTM file.

Yes the file name is a prompted value, but not the part number. Make the part number property a prompted value and it will correctly populate your BOM.

In my case, the filename and the part number are
always the same. This would require me to enter this number in twice for
custom iParts... (bummer)

Kirk,

Is there an update for the
iChannel?  There was an error in that file!  Did tell Charles!
Be careful and check the dimensions.

I have tried to suggest to
Autodesk a solution to this problem but I have not had any reply
Kirk!

This will make it possible to have a custom property
yet have a regular iPart filename.

How about giving me two excel sheets in the
iPart. One I construct and one that Inventor generates as excel vba routine
(?) when a custom property(ies) is chosen.

This vba excel sheet would have all the first sheet
members plus the custom property(ies) as an regular property(ies) and be "the"
sheet  when the filename is generated.

When a second iPart is chosen with a new custom
property, Inventor would read from the constructed sheet and generates another
line in the vba excel sheet.

This should improve iParts quite a bit

Kirk,

It's a limitation of custom iParts. Autodesk knows it's a problem...

Thanks,
At least I know it is not something I am doing wrong.

Kirk,

After some more investigation I found that this was fixed. At least in
R6SP2.

Can you send me the part or post it in CF and I'll have a look. You should
be able to specify the part # and make it stick.

My apologies for misleading you.

Do you know what the error was?  I
noticed that the slope on the flanges was not correct and fixed that.  I
didn't see any other problem, but I didn't check ALL of the information in
the spread sheet.

(in reply to your email)

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood you once again.

What you want is not possible right now. If you do not specify a part #
column (which your part does not have) it will use the filename of the base
part (not the name you save it as).

If you do specify the part number column it wil be as selected in the table.

What doesn't work is if you base the part number off the length or some other trickery in Excel. It would be cool if the excel cells were recalculated based on the input but unfortunately the cells are static values unless excel is open 😞
