Crashing Rev8

....Brought over from the rev7 group...
In an assembly if I select a part and RMB and then select "isolate" it crashes...every time. Can anyone explain to me what this "isolation" option is suppose to do? Other than crash my system. BTW - My system: Brand spanking new...Dell PWS360; Pent4; CPU 2.60Ghz; 512 RAM; video card: nVidia Quadro FX500 (128mb)...any clue?

Hey Kent....
How in the world did I post as you? I'm logged in as me and I have no idea what your log in is. This is too weird.

When you RMB on a part or assembly in the
browser and select isolate, all other parts/sub-assemblies in the current
assembly have their visibility turned off.  It works perfectly on my
computer and I am running a Compaq laptop with an ATI graphics
card.

Hmmm, would it matter if I already made a part(s) invisible and then selected "isolate"? I'd tend to think not. But I'm gonna fire up IV again and give it a try without doing such....I'll post result in a few.

THAT'S IT!!!! Do NOT, I repeat...do NOT have any parts set as "invisible" and then select "isolate" otherwise it'll crash. It works fine otherwise. Can someone verify this please?

I can turn the visibility of some parts off and
isolate still works fine.  If I have some parts in a subassembly turned off
and then isolate that subassembly, it isolates just fine but the parts that I
originally turned off are still off (as I would expect them to be).

It was a good thought, but that doesn't seem to be
a problem on my computer.

dag nab it!!! Why me?!!!! Why me?!!!
Well I guess until I figure out why it makes my system crash (mine's the only system rev8 is loaded on at the moment) I'll just have to make sure I don't use this option or whatever....ugh.

Well kids, I have figured it out (I hope). The assembly or any assembly where I can make rev8 crash as described all have unresolved links in them. I don't get the crash issue in assemblies where I resolve the links.

Thanks for reporting this.  This issue has now
been logged.

Well now that we know what it's for, how do we get out of it? When I isolate, I'm stuck. I've tried all the RMB options, views, help files, everything I can think of. Once I isolate a part, I have to close the assembly file and re-open to get back to a normal view.

Have you tried using the system all.visible design
view?

Yes, I have. That, of course turns EVERYTHING back on, just like it says. I often have assemblies with some things not visible so that I can check different fits, configurations, etc. Going to "System All"means going back to square one on my configuration. I also found that closing and re-opening does NOT re-set visibility. I don't really have a need for the Isolate function; it just seems odd that it is semi-permanent, and that the help files have no reference to it at all.

Thanks for the reply

Odd, I have access to visibility for all components. RMB on a component
and hit "isolate", everything else turns off. Highlight any other
component or shift/select multiple and RMB/click "visibility" and they
are restored to visible.

Yes, but with maybe 100 parts in an assembly, and 25 or so not visible, it's a pain to restore that configuration. It's no problem; I just won't ever again click that button-at least not on purpose. I still don't know what the value of that function is supposed to be, though.

so you don't have to see through 100 parts when
your modifying one or two

Good point. I still wish there were a good way to get back to the starting point. I've never uses any of the other 3D systems (PTC, SW, etc.), but some people have mentioned that some of them have a "configuration" control. That might make this a more useful function. I'm sure that most people will be quite content with it as is, though.

Thanks

As a relatively painless workaround, save a design
view of your current state before using Isolate. Apply the design view to
restore to the original conditions.
