Content Center File Versions

By default Content Center creates the sub-directories 2012, 2011, 2010 etc. to store the generated content center instance files. I have never changed this behavior. Why is it required to maintain these files in the existing separate directories? I don't intend to use a previous release of Inventor once upgraded.

I can see that there is a good possibility of generating the same content center instance in multiple directories ie: if you created a 1/2" nut in the 2011 directory and then there is a good chance of doing it again in the 2012 directory.

I would like to migrate all the files in those directories to my current release 2012 then place them in a common "generic" directory without separation into yearly subdirectories. Would this cause any serious issues?

I know I'll probably be resolving links for a while, but I can deal with that as long as Content Center still works after that. I would of course change the default location to my "generic" location.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Please, try the following.

  • Edit your project.
  • Under Folder Options, edit the Content Center Files path and set your generic path (i.e.: C:\Demo)

Edit.png

  • Open a dummy assembly and insert any component from the Content Center.
  • After that, under the Demo folder you will find the subfolder en-US and, under this, the subfolder of the family of the component you have inserted.

folder.png

  • After that, in Windows Explorer, you can copy all the subfolders you have under “…\2010\ en-US\”, “…\2011\ en-US\”, “…\2012\ en-US\”, under “C:\Demo\ en-US”.
  • In case you have the same folder under 2010, 2011 and 2012, copy the folder from 2010 first, then copy the content of the same folder from 2011 and 2012 (in this order) inside the folder from 2010 you have copied under “C:\Demo\ en-US”, accepting to replace the existing files while you are copying the files from 2011 and 2012.
  • Now, if you were using custom libraries in previous versions and you want to migrate and use them in Inventor 2012 as well, you can follow the procedure you can find here for migrating them.
  • Otherwise, if you were just using the Standard CC Libraries without any customization, you can skip the previous point.
  • So, once you have everything under “C:\Demo\ en-US”, in order to update all the contents to R2012 versions, start Task Scheduler, menu Create Tasks > Refresh Standard Components and select your project.

I hope it helps.

Please, tell me if you need clarification about any of the steps above.

Kind regards,

Alessandro

Alessandro:

I have copied the files as you have described. My custom libraries were already migrated and copied to the 2012 partition so I just moved them. The only thing that hasn't worked is Refreshing the Standard Content. Please advise what might be the issue here. I will attach some screen shots of what happened when I tried to refresh the standard content through Task Scheduler.  Other than that, I tested the new Content Center file location by opening a few assemblies and it works remarkably well. Just need some feedback on how to refresh the content. Isn't it O.K. to just Migrate the files?

Please advise.

Thanks,

Mike

Oops, now I'll attach the screen shots.

Hi Mike,

Glad the main procedure has worked fine.

For the Task Scheduler procedure, please, try the following.

  • Start Inventor.
  • Vault Server > Login > Set the Content auto login option if not selected and make the login.

Autologin.png

  • Check that the Content Center File path for the active project is the one where you have moved all the standard contents.
  • Open one assembly.
  • Menu Manage > Content Center > Refresh.

If the manual Refresh works, close Inventor and try again the Task Scheduler procedure.

I hope it helps.

Kind regards,

Alessandro

Alessandro:

1. Tested a couple of assemblies as you described - works well.

2. Started Task Scheduler and selected a project in which I actually had assembly files. That was my problem before, I just created a blank project with reference to the new location of the Content Center files - kind of meaningless since there are no assemblies. Anyway, I started the refresh on the "real" project and all seemed to be preprocessing just fine. though it will take a looong time. I stopped the process since I needed to get to work on Inventor. I will run it again when I have some down time, but I expect it should work fine.

Thanks,

Mike
