Constraints to default position

Often times I find myself grounding a part that I have made in the context
of an assembly and then measuring what the constraint would be, and THEN
applying the constraint. If I turn off the grounding and the part stays
where it belongs then I know I did it right. What I would like to rather do
is - as in dimensioning - apply, for example, a mate constraint. When the
dialogue box comes up, it would be desirable for it to display the current
position as the value of the impending constraint as a default - instead of
zero. Can anyone suggest a better workflow, or at least commiserate about
the desire for a default value in the constaint dialogue?

ProE does what you're saying. I'm not sure I like it though. Most of my constraints end up being zero and using your approach (ProE's approach) I have to hit the 0 key for every constraint I want to be zero. In ProE I do find it useful from time to time but I don't like it set up that way as the default. Maybe the iTeam could add a button or something that would copy the current value into the value field.

My $.02 worth.

You can pull out on the flyout and choose measure.
It will then fill in the offset field with the value you measure.

How about just another choice in the combo box for
the value.

The combo box is already programmed in. And
"Measure value" is already there.

Now you'd have to just add "Current value
face="Times New Roman" size=3>" to the combo box.

Well darn it why couldn't I have seen that? I use Measure all the time in part modeling but I guess it just never caught my eye or my imagination while constraining an assy.

Oh well , the learning continues. Thanks Sean for supplying the obvious answer I've been too blind to see.

But by indicating the [mate] surfaces, you've
already "done" the measuring. It seems to me why should I have to measure it
twice??

True, but I still say that I'd rather the default stay at zero. I rarely do a "constraint to default posititon" so the measure tool will do for me. Don't mean to sound self absorbed or anything. I'm open to having an additional optoin in there I just don't want it to become the default.

I agree with Mech.  If it were the way you
wanted it, there would be a lot more typing involved.  Most times a mate is
at 0 offset.

I agree with you both. Feels good. But having the
option to set a part at it's "Current Position" is also a valid suggestion
worthy of more than glossing over or presenting a united front. Gimme an I . .
.

Why are you being so defensive?  This united
front thing is getting old.  Get some new rhetoric.

I was stating my opinion.  I agree with
Mech.  I was not glossing over anything.  I just simply didn't care
enough about adding in such a feature to type about it.

We don't always have to agree.

I first started using that in SM trying to figure
out the length for the fold command.

It would be great,if a constrant that that is in consistant, would give the a defalt offset that is needed for it to work. I think this would solve Paul,s problem and a lot of mine.

But there could be an infinate number of values that might work for that constraint so how would IV know which one to use?

Most of my constrants that will not work. donot work becouse of some offset error. 3/16" will not match .187" .0005 offset and every one is happy. I know that this will not work all the time but when it does it would be nice.

Maybe they ought to make it where it can read our
minds, then it wouldn't have to guess which solution we wanted. <G> Yeah
... then we could change this group to the iNit Sweaters group.

Larry:

In my case IV reads my mind.

I haven't got a clue and that's pretty much the way IV reads it when
constraining.
