constraining a flat head

I'm trying to constrain a flat head screw to a countersunk hole. In MDT I
would use insert and select the tapered face on both parts. I apparently
can't do that here. If I try to mate the axis of the screw to the axis of
the hole and then mate the two tapered faces, IV crashes everytime. This
can't really be that difficult. Am I missing something?

Instead of axis, you can select other to select the tapered faces (the cl
turns off) and use the mate command or you can use insert by highlighting
the circles at one or another intersection.

I've used tangent with the conical faces like flat heads and drill points as
well.

If I do that, it crashes. Is there something similar to MDTs audit or
amrecover?

Only in MDT. I'd guess there is a system configuration problem that's
making it crash: some other program that's running (maybe even OE; I've
taken to running with mine off) or a TSR or Anti-Virus or a budget ram
problem ... something conflicting, but you'll just have to run it down; too
many possibilities.

See posted avi in CF (pretty small one). First apply the mate to the screw
and the hole. Then the tangent to the conical surfaces. You have to change
the tangent constraint condition before you apply it or Inventor gets ugly.

I just posted something last week about how few crashes I've had with IV. At
least I know when they're coming though. If it crashes once, it will do it
again.

Usually this about where one of those eager Autodesk programmers come on and
ask you to post the file so they can look at it.

If it's not completely important that the conical of the screw is actually
touching the conical hole, you can use insert constraint, and select the bottom
of the tapers on bother parts. If it is important, you must make sure the tapers
match, then select the faces without the axis lines (use select other...)

I use Mate/Axis then Flush contraint. This way, I don't have to worry about
the tapered surfaces being exactly the same.

Yes you do. If they aren't exactly the same angle, it won't Flush.

Maybe he is mating the top face flush with the surface of the part.

Kevin

For fun 8^) try changing your video settings to one of the two lower overrides in the
hardware tab and see if that makes any difference. Before SP1 some people were having a
lot of crashes adding constraints and I think some of it was video card related.

I was just trying to install SP2 to see if that worked. Apparently I didn't
install SP1 properly, because the about screen still reads 6.0. I'll have to
load those. Until then, do you think changing the graphics card setting will
help?
