Compact Model History

I am preparing the final exam for this semester. I always check the whats new (IV9) at the end of the semester when creating the exam to make sure I have covered everything. I came across the phrase "Compact Model History" and seem to remember seeing that before but ignoring it.
Now reading the help screen I can't seem to invoke a scenario where this comes up. Can someone give me a better explanation than the help files?

Compact Model History

Select to purge rollback document history when you save the file. Clear the check box to regenerate the document history to reenable fast editing performance and select Tools, and then click Rebuild All.

Note: Select this option only when working with large assembly files and disk space is limited.

The way I had it explained to me :-

Image a model with 100 features

Inventor stores the list of features and can update the model with any
changes by rebuilding each feature with it's new values (i.e you change a
sketch and the model gets bigger)

Now, imagine you want to make a change to feature 87 out of 100 - Inventor
would have to recalculate all features from 1 to 100 to show you your
changes.
This would obviously take some time.

What Inventor does to speed things up is to store cached versions of the
model in stages in the IPT (I don't know what the stages actually are so the
next bit is a guess)

For example the IPT file stores :-

A version of the model with features 1 to 20 calculated
A version with features 21 to 40 calculated,
41 to 60, 61 to 80 etc...

So if you make a change to feature 87, it can quickly go to it's cached "up
to feature 80" version and just add on the next 7 features which saves time
by not having to rebuild the entire model.


Basically, it caches part built models in the ipt file to aid in the speed
of rebuilding after edits.
This makes things quicker, but the IPT file is bigger. The cached versions
can be purged but subsequent rebuilds will be slower.

This is a setting that is specific to the migration software. It is one of
several options when running a migration.

Do you mean "Where's the checkbox"?

I haven't got R9 to hand so I'm not sure if it's in the Application Options
or Document Settings but I know for sure it's in the Migration Utility.

Basically, tick the box to ensure that when you save you get a smaller file
that doesn't contain the various stages but takes longer to compute and is a
smaller file size.

Leave it unticked to get files which have multiple stages saved and compute
quicker but have bigger file sizes and use more memory.
You will have to go to Tools > Rebuild all though to recalculate the extra
stages (which may take longer than a normal rebuild) but will then be
quicker to edit after the fact.

The Compact Model History option is located on the Modeling tab of Document
Settings.

Actually it is there,

I just typed "Compact Model History" in Help-->Search

We say:

"Access: In a part or assembly document, click Tools > Document Settings >
Modeling tab in the dialog box.

Compact Model History

Sometimes I'm not always "there" 😉

Could that line have been added in v10? I just typed the word compact in the help index in v9 and that line was missing. The only help was exactly what I copied and pasted in the first post.

It was there in R9 too. I should have been more specific. Type "Compact
Model History" on the Index tab, not the search one.

I would be surprised if some one even responded this old thread. From the explanation from Rory is very nice. But, I want to know if there is any improvement on this since 2005?

The "Compact model History" check box was never checked from the beginning. I have my model so large now it takes for ever to edit any feature.

Should it make it any better if I check this box now? I dont see much difference...

If I edit any feature be it begining of the model tree or at the end of the tree...on the status bar (lower left corner UI) i see "executing update full part"

Why should the inventor update full part. How can I have inventor concentrate on the currently edited feature.

I wish I could send the casting model but I cant. Its utilising all kinds of stuff Surface modeling, multi bodies, delete faces, drafts patterns etc? Its such a long tree that its takes hell a lot time if AI needs to rebuild whole model for each feature edit.
