Common Sketches for different parts

I have been looking for a way to avoid recreating sketches that could be
used to create slightly different parts. This is what I have done.

I first create a master part file with all the geometry known to be the
same for a group of parts.
Then I derive that file into the final part file.
I Start a new sketch and promote the geometry needed for that sketch. I
create as many sketches as I need from that geometry.
When I have consumed and the geometry in sketches, I delete the derived
part.
Upon deleting the derived part, all the geometry on the sketches are
change to reference geometry so it must be changed back to normal and
constrained.
Now I can use these sketches as if I had created them from scratch.

I think that I have found a solution that does what I need but would like
some advise as to any drawbacks.

Thanks,

Mark N.

I may be missing what you're trying to do but I do something similar (I
think). I do a sketch that contains the different configurations and just
extrude what needs to be extruded then save copy as.

If you are going to delete the geometry anyway, wouldn't it be easier to do
your sketch in AutoCAD? Sketch on different layers & they will come in as
separate sketches. That way you have full control over visibility & can
create more complex geometry. Inventor chokes when you start getting larger
sketches. Just a thought anyway.

I have yet to figure out how to get AutoCAD geometry into IV so that it
comes in as a sketch instead of "3rd Party". Please explain!

That works also but I am creating a many similar parts that share only . . .
say 3 bosses in a circular pattern and a few other cuts on a round disk.
What I want to do is copy those shared sketches into similar but different
parts.

While in a sketch hit the Acad Icon.

It really sounds to me like you should just be doing Master sketch
modeling. Actually you are doing it, but then you break the link which
is the best part about master sketch.

After posting this initial thread, I visited your site once again and found
the bit on Master Sketch. It does seem that simple and turns out that is
what I probably was doing without knowing.

Thanks!

Now I am very curious...

...what is your solution? Not breaking the link with the derived sketch?
Welcome to Skeleton Modeling (or Master Modeling)!

Master Modeling/Skeleton Modeling seems to solve the things I wanted to do.
