Changing the path of the library parts

Hi Guys,

Since autodesk developers didn't think of the fact that somebody might want to change the material of the bolt or hollow sections when it get's saved in the library, is there any way of changing the default saving path of the content center generated parts? These parts are getting saved in the library folder at the moment so Inventor doesn't allow me to change their material.

Thanks

Hi Barvas11,

Typically the strategy used for this is to create a "Librarian" project file, that does not include the path of the library set as a library. Then you set that project active and make all of the edits you need to. Then you set your standard project active again to do regular design work.

Will this work for you?

I hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for your answer but I have never created a project file before so I don't want to play about with this too much.

Hi Barvas11,

There would be 3 other ways that I can think of to accomplish this.

  1. Place Content Center Parts as Custom: Simply use the "As Custom" radio button in the dialog box when placing content center parts, this allows you to choose any path for the file. Then you can edit the material. This will work for new CC parts, but you'd have to re-place CC parts that you've already used, as custom, to change their material. Or use on of the other suggestions for those parts already placed CC parts.
  2. Move, Edit, Move Back: Move the part from the Content Center folder to some temporary folder (one that the Inventor project does not have set as a library path), make the changes to the material, then move the file back to it's exact, original location.
  3. Create and Edit a Custom Content Center Library: This is probably the more direct answer to your question, but since you're not familar with creating project files, I'm not sure if this will be the right way to go. It's pretty involved and has a lot of varibles that will depend on your setup, but here are some links to cover the basics:

Hi Curtis,

That's the way I have been doing it but it's a pain..... I was looking for something permanent so that everybody in our office could change materials of the parts without moving them about.
