Changing single iPart in component pattern

I'm running Inventor Pro 2011 and I'd like to know if there's a way to change the configuration of an iPart in a component pattern.  For example:  In an assembly, I have created a component pattern of an iPart with configurations "A" and "B".  I'd like to change some instances of the component to configuration "B", and leave some as configuration "A".  The patter starts out as A-A-A-A-A and I'd like to use the iPart to change the patter to A-B-A-B-A.  Is this possible without making the elements "independent?"   I'm sorry if this has been asked before, I didn't find anything doing a quick search.

Sorry, the closest you could do would be to create two groups and double your spacing and end up with two separate groups having have as many incidents with double the spacing.

Just insert the picture rather than attaching it as a file

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for confirming it for me.
