Cannot save idw files as pdf ... anymore

Hello,

I am facing a problem I cannot find how to overcome with Autodesk Inventor 2014.

When I click on the menu, then "Export" and "PDF", autodesk don't offer me the possibility to use the pdf extension in "Save as type" window. And if I add manually the extension ".pdf" at the end of the File Name, then click on save, I get an error message saying :

"Cannot save the document with the specified extension (it is not the right type). Type a different extension for the document you want to save, or do not enter an extension."

The wierdest thing is that I have been exporting hundreds of .idw drawings this way for a month now. Everything went perfectly until today. I tryed to repeat this operation with drawings I had already exported to pdf format a week ago, but now it does not work anymore.

So my Autodesk software cannot create anymore pdf from a .idw drawing but I can't find the reason why since nothing have changed on my computer since last time I exported one to a pdf.

I would appreciate a lot if someone could help me finding a solution.

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Can you try logging in as a different admin user on your computer and try it?

If that works maybe try this..

Hi,

I have tried with other user accounts but it did not work on them
either. However, I know someone else connected to my computer on another
account since last time I (successfully) export a drawing to pdf
format. I will try to see what it gives on his user account.
I have tried the first method suggested in the link you gave me anyway.
But when I type "unregister" after the pathway to Inventor.exe, an error
message stating that the pathway is invalid is returned on the dialog
box. And I have checked that the pathway I typed is correct.

Have you just tried a repair install of Inventor?

Actually, that is the issue. That was how I used to save my files as pdf one
week ago, when it worked. But now it doesn't anymore.

Check on your system for any Windows Updates or any other changes to your system from the time when it worked and and quit working.

Start>Control Panel>Programs and Features>View Installed Updates.

Also try using a local directory on your machine, create a TEMP directory on the C:\ drive and see if it works there. Possibly something on your network has changed and you don't have proper privileges to write to the existing directory.

Just insert the picture rather than attaching it as a file

No idea if this will help or is any part of it but go to tools..options section and press the +Add-Ins button.

Then go to the translators tab and see what it says for "Translator PDF".. maybe try clicking the loaded/unloaded check box and maybe check to ensure the associated DLL file (location section down below) is present..

If all else fails and you don't want to or can't submit a support case to Autodesk I would simply try uninstalling and reinstalling Inventor completely and follow recommended procedures for installing (disable UAC/AV/Firewall,etc..)

Hi! Could you take a look at the Add-In loading status? Go to Tools -> Add-Ins -> Translators -> Translator: PDF. Is it loaded?

Thanks!

Hi,

I have checked the PDF translator, and it is loaded "On demand" which
shouldn't be a problem. Nevertheless, I ticked the box "Loaded\Unloaded" to
make sure it is loaded (it is written next to Translator : PDF in the
column "Load Behaviour"), but it still doesn't work.

However I think that we are on the right way, because the location of the
"Translator: PDF" is the following

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2014\Bin\DWFOut.dll

But I checked that DWFOut.dll did not exist in the Bin directory. I guess
it must have been removed or renamed, causing my drawings not to be PDF
exportable anymore.

Do you know what should be file (and its location) corresponding to the PDF
Translator ? If it has been deleted, do you know how I can get one? And if
the Location name is wrong, do you know how to change it? Because in the
Add-Ins Manager panel, one can see the Location of the translator but not
change it.

Thanks !

It should be there..

Here is a copy from my 2014 version.. Unzip and stick it there and see if it works..
