Can't Shell my tire

Hiya all.

I am modeling a tire. I got the tread in using extrusion into and extruded circle.

but I keep getting, use a smaller wall size. I have managed to acheive it before but for some reason it won't let me do it this time.

I have attached the file in the hope some one would be able to assist me.

many thanks

Becky

Pay attention to the uncontrolled creation of useless Sketches.

In this case instead the Sheel tool i would use a  revolve cut.

This seems to be some work for Autodesk QA.

I tried a Rebuild All with 2015 SP1 Update 1, and failed at Extrusion2.

I ended with a Crash. No CER sent.

thankyou for your replies.

I will try the revolve cut once I understand how it works

admittedly I am in short supply of ram so my machine trips over easily.

Hi Becky,

At what thickness are you attempting the shell?

I tried to shell your part at 1mm but this fails - one cause could be the small features on the tread. Can you remember how you achieved the shell in the past? When I attempted the shell at 0.1mm it succeeded with no problems; it was a bit slow but I'd expect that for a shell at this stage of the model.

Would it be more appropriate to shell before modelling a tread? It seems to be the way that they're constructed eventually, here's a picture I found of a tractor tyre cross section:

Separately, this seems to be made in Inventor 2015 without updates. I'd recommend installing Service Pack 1 and then Update 1 for SP1 which can be found here.

Looking forward to hearing back!

Hiya,

Am getting used to it more and more. The main thing is how to see a part within the mind and breaking it down in stages.

Thank you for the advice. I was aiming for 2 mm. But with what you said, I found it not a problem.

Hi Becky,

I'm glad that you found a way through this, hope the rest of the project goes well!

A fellow forum user with the username -niels- usually posts a thread on Fridays for others to add pictures of their work. It would be great to see pictures of your progress there 🙂

Best wishes,

Indy
