Can't project intersection between two pipes

I am having problems with projecting the intersection between two pipes onto a sketch.

I get the error: "Projection of the selected spline edge/curve would result in a degenerate segemtn and cause future modelling problems."

I have attached a screenshot that hopefullly explains it.

Any ideas?

I have a workaround which involves exporting to AutoCAD and then back to inventor but that is quite tedious.

I would use the Copy Object command to create surfaces for trimming the parts. I'll see if I can dig up one of my class examples to illustrate.

I am trying to model a crotchplate, as per the attached picture.

So I need that curve of the intersection projected on the yz plane.

Helps also to post your Inventor version.

Would have been nice to know that... I'd then take a different approach like this:

I use Inventor Professional 2011 64-bit.

Can you explain how you did this? Although I think you have modelled what I would call a wrapper plate. Attached is another view of what I am trying to do.

That should be collar plate.

It seems that edge projection fails near the end points of the projected curve. To avoid this region I split the larger cylindrical surface using a workplane that was slightly shifted from the midplane. Sketch projection then used the edge of this split surface. Hopefully this approximate solution would work for you.

Thanks a lot!

That approximation is close enough for me.
