are you opening a file from a newer release (say 10) in a older version of Inventor (<=9)? If so, thats the problem.
Otherwise, try closing Inventor and rebooting. If that doesn't fix it, go to the OldVersions folder in the same folder as the assembly you are trying to open. Open the newest old version (will have same name with number on the end).
