Is this a Content Center part?  These cannot be edited directly by opening the file, they are set to Read Only.  Depending on what you are trying to do there are a number of methods for making changes to Content Center files.

Open form Content Center, "As Custom", and save the part to your hard drive somewhere.  Make you changes, and save the part.  Now edit the part in the Content Center, (Tools, Editor).  Right click on the part in the CC, select Replace Family Template, navigate to the file you just modified and select it.  It should publish your changes over the existing family table.

If all you need is to change some table values, that can be done by editing the Family Table in the Content Center.

So... it depends on what you want to do.

Based on the posted error, this is a library file. Library files are set to read only to avoid them from being edited by the general user.

You'll need Admin rights or at least read/write permissions to modify library files.

Hi joflaherty,

I agree with the first part, the error message seems to indicates that the file is located in a folder path ( called "Standard_ASSEMBLYS") that Inventor is seeing as a Library.

But I'm not sure I understand the statement "You'll need Admin rights or at least read/write permissions to modify library files."

Hi andrew.nao,

Recall that a Library folder path is set in the Inventor project file settings. Meaning that when we specify that a folder is a Library in the Inventor project file, Inventor sees everything in that folder as read only. So my guess is that somone has set that assembly up to be read only for a reason.

Links about project libraries:

Typically to modify a library file with either move the file out of the Library folder and make the changes, and then move it back (assuming we know that the changes should be allowed). Or we create another Inventor project file called "Librarian Project" or something similar, and we ensure that the Library folder is not set in this project. Then we can set this project active in order to update library parts.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

Curtis,

What I was refering to (and I guess assuming) is that most places will have their library files/folders locked down by permissions, preventing the general CAD user from modifying the library parts. AKA typically the CAD Admin and or a user tasked with managing those libraries that will have permissions set that allows them to modify library files.

That's typically what I've seen and again, was just assuming that maybe this is what the OP was dealing with.

Cheers,

thats what im confused about. its not a content center item. its not being used in another assembly. why its showing up in a library i have no idea. its a generic assembly to be used on other assemblies when its complete, its not even finished. how do i "check out" a file for editing? ill check into everyone suggestions and report back

Sorry about the confusion on my part...you say you don't use Vault, what are you using for data managment? The error states the file is not checked out to you, is it checked out to someone else? What is controlling the files check out status?

As stated prior, the assembly seems to be set as a library file, this is part of the issue preventing you from editing.

If time is of the essence, you could do a Save As and give it a temporary name, make your edits and then overwrite the original once you figure out the errors...at least you'll have a version of the updates as opposed to spinning your wheels in the mean time.....just a thought.

Another possible option is since the warning does state it “Cannot modify the library file” is that you have the assembly file in a folder that is marked in your project file as a library. Please check your project file and see that there is no reference to the folder H:\3DBlocks-Inventor\Standard_assemblys\ in Libraries or create a new project file that has the workspace as H:\3DBlocks-Inventor\Standard_assemblys so you can edit the file as a normal Inventor file. Any file in an Inventor library path is project from being edited by Inventor.
