Break Out View Creation

I am trying unsuccessfully to create a break out view in R7.
Instructions say:

"To create a break out view, place the parent view then create an
associated sketch with one or more closed profiles to to define the the
boundry of the break out area."

Is this done on an .idw?

I have a cylindrical part and just to test things, I drew a triangle on
top of it in the .idw. But when I selected Break Out Veiw, I got an
error message about there not being a closed profile. I also tried
doing this by drawing the triangle in the .ipt, but got same result.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

You need to make sure the sketch is associated to the view. To attach a sketch
to a view (in idw) SELECT the view (not just highlight) and hit "S" key or
Sketch icon.

Just saw an earlier post about this. I can get the sketch on drawing, but
I do not get the break out view after I select the profile and depth. When
I select the profile should it be shaded, as it does when extruding a
sketch on the model.

No. The line will just highlight when selected. Make sure you are selecting the
depth correctly. I still don't have a handle on exactly how IV handles this.

Select the view in the browser and then either hit the sketch button or the S key. This
will make the sketch associated to the view and it should then work.

After going through these steps, I have an additional view listed in the browser. When I
select that view, the sketch pops up in the parent view. but I am not getting the "break
out".

I am just selecting the "through part" depth.

For what it's worth,

I'll see if I can do a quick tutorial this weekend and post it to Sean's
site. (sdotson.com)

For through part, you must select the part to go through.

....and to do that you need to check the 'show contents' box in edit view under the options tab and then select the part in the browser window.
Hope i'm not teaching you to suck eggs but it took me a little while to work this one out!
