Best Network Hardware?

We are planning some network updates and would like some feedback as to the fastest configuration for running inventor.

8 Inventor users (standalone installation)
All files stored on a network drive
Typical assemblies have 500 to 1500 parts

Do the (8) users normally work independently or do you share parts that are actively worked on ?? If you have standard parts that don't change, those don't apply, of course. Unless you can invest in gigabit hardware, I'd look at semi-isolated projects (it will copy the necessary files to your local PC so the initial file-open could be slow) or possibly Vault (it will do similarly).

Gigabit or fiber is the way to go...... building for future needs..

What about server hardware?

Should we have a dedicated Engineering server for the 8 users that then connects to the rest of the network?

If the server is only storing the files, no dedicated machine is needed, IMO.

Yes, engineering should have a dedicated server, espcially when creating and
using large assemblies. Even more important when running Vault or a shared
environment. I've seen companies where everyone was connected to the same
server, and at 4pm when they run reports in the office, engineering comes to
a standstill.
