Basic Shell question

I'm new to Inventor and 3D modeling in general and I just have a quick ( and probably stupid) question about the shell function.  If I have a 3d solid object, and I shell it outwards, is the volume between the original walls and the new outside walls hollow or filled?

Thanks, and sorry if this has been answered before, I couldn't find an answer from my searching.

I would expect it to be a solid.
