Basic design methode--> iPart or template??

Just want to know how is the best way to design in INV. I design sawmill equipment(convoyor, step feeder,transfert...). By the past, I have made a bank of material with iPart (square and round steel tube, shaft and other steel shape, bolt, bearing).
The good thing with the iPart is the automatic BOM creation and you have the adavantage of update ALL the BOM field when you change any dimension on the part. But, you can't put the parts adaptive because I use custom parameter for the lenght. Now, I have some problem (since IV6) with my iParts (mainly the steel shape) that I can't fix and it's very annoying.(see this thread: http://discussion.autodesk.com/WebX?viewTopic@187.oyHCa1JZsGw.4@.f161f96!page=1&keywords=closterman&discussionRange=current&dateRange=threeMonths&productParent=.ee93814 ) By the way, I said in this thread that I fix my issue but finaly I have fix the problem only in some of my iPart.....:-(
What I want to do now is to make a bank of steel shape in different template. The main advantage is to be able to use the adaptivity. I can make my template to create automaticly the BOM but if you change something, the description can't update... I think to use the iPart only for bolt, bearing and other manufacture parts
Brief, I want to know how do you work and why ?? :0)

What you are describing is how I work. I love the
iparts for hardware and non-adaptive items. But for structural tube, angle,
I-beam, etc. I use templates so that I can use the adaptivity and custom
properties to drive my cutlists and stock numbers. This has been working very
well for me. Unfortunitly you endup with quite a few templates and since you can
only go one folder deep in the templates dirrectory it can be difficult to get
everything organized nicely. Good luck.

I work the same way, I have a number of folders in
my templates folder- Angles, Beams, Channels etc with the full range of
catalogue sizes. Within each templates it is easy to fill out properties
that will be required for extraction later such as length, description etc.

Then use I-parts for standard hardware such as
bolts, motors, sprockets etc.
