balloon value in drawing of multiple subassemblies

I have drawing of an assembly with subassemblies a,b, & c. I would like the balloons on the drawing to use the part number from subassembly (a) subassemblies and parts. The geometry for b & c is made phantom and will not get ballooned. Currently I can either get the subassembly part number (a) using the structured view, or the part number of the part in the parts only view which is ok unless it is a subassembly in (a) which I then need the subassembly part number.

If you are trying to get the parts and sub-assemblies in sub-assembly A to show up in your parts list, then in your assembly BOM, try making the structure of sub-assy A phantom.

I can get the bom to look like I want, but the balloons are what I am refering to in my post.

I' confused about what you are trying to accomplish also. Are you saying in 1 view when you pick a part of a subassembly you want it to know to put the balloon for the corresponding subassembly and in another view you want it to know to put the balloon for the part (subassembly component) you just picked?

Or are you trying to get the part number to appear inside the balloon?

If that is the case then try this:

Create a new balloon style called something like "Part Number" and for the property display, choose Part Number. If the structure of sub-assembly A is set to Phantom then, I believe, the correct sub-assembly or part number should be displayed in the balloon.

Jeff,
That is funny. Now that I read it again I could see how you came up with that (part number in the balloon) also. Shows you how on a message board like this to get a good answer you need a good question. This one I clearly don't understand.

I've read the OP ten times and I still don't have
a clue what was meant.

I think he is trying to get the structured BOM view expanded so that he can balloon all the parts and the assemblies that contain the parts, but when the structure is expanded you cannot balloon an assembly as it is ignored so that it will balloon the part that is picked in the assembly.
Workaround time I think, pick a part in the assembly then edit the balloon and put in the assembly part number.

Not at my Inventor machine at the moment to try it, but can you place or add a balloon and select an expanded assembly from list? This may be an option but I have my doubts.

Does this make sense?

Have just tried the attach balloon from list and this method will allow you to pick a part from an expanded assembly partlist.
Another balloon can be attached to the first using the assembly part number from the list.
After this delete the first balloon and you should have an assembly balloon from an expanded assembly. Edited by: harco on Sep 4, 2009 8:25 PM

Making the assembly phantom in the bom works. I now get the subassemblies in that assembly to show up in the balloon as I need. Sorry my initial post was so confusing to everyone.

Monday off and then an active discussion about what I need help with (I guess it's all going to be downhill from here).

What I need is to balloon a subassembly but the subassembly makes no sense without the parent shown.
I can set the partslist source to the subassembly but the balloons are coming still from the parent's BOM.

I had one thought, if I make a derived part of the parent suppressing the subassembly, then place that in the into the sub ...

Would I still get a circular dependency if I break the link in the derived part?

And then there is the sloppy workaround I always end up doing, but I always forget ...

how do I get the subassembly to expand?

There is some stupid little button somewhere and I can never find it. I should write a note to remind myself and put somewhere I think I'll be able to find it (there are probably a couple of places I don't remember where there are a couple of these notes already).

The best way to get something to stop making a funny noise is to ask someone to come over and listen to it.
So I figured out how to expand the BOM on my own:

"View Options" - the button with what looks like a magnifying glass
then
"View Properties..."
and in the "Level" pulldown select "All Levels"

Now I just have to renumber each item individually to get rid of the "45." that doesn't mean anything if the visibility of every part in the parent is off.
