Autosave

Why is there no autosave or recovery in Inventor? And if there is, how do I turn it on. I've lost a lot of valuable work time due to inventor shutting down on me all the time. I know to save, save, save, but sometimes you get lost in the work and the next time you blink is when you get the I'm sorry, inventor has caused a serious error and needs to shut down, and by then it's too late. Please help!

There is a timer function is IV2010 to remind you.
You can set the reminder time.

No autosave. I can count the crashes on my system in the past
year with less fingers than on one hand. You need to troubleshoot WHY you are
having the frequent crashes.

My number one reason for crashing, creating new
parts within an IAM and not do the initial save.

I couldn't count the times it's crashed on all my fingers and toes in the last three weeks. I always hit send report, but I really don't know how to trouble shoot it as far as why it keeps shutting down.

Could you please provide dataset and the steps to reproduce the crash? My
mail address is bo.wangATautodesk.com. This will help a great deal to look
into the crash issue that you are facing.

Thanks,

The problem is that there is no particular dataset that causes the crash, so at the moment I can't even think of one in particular. However, what I can say at the moment us that it is usually larger assys that have several sets of flexible subassys, that may have flexible assys in them as well. For instance, I have an oven door assy, and then in that assy I place a subassy that contains a fan and an electrical harness. The fan will be constrained to the door, but harness will not be since I need to move it once I place the door into the main oven assy, so I make the fan assy flexible within the door. Then, I insert the door assy into the top level oven assy, and make the door assy flexible so I can then move the harness in the door to the location in the oven wherre it needs to be showed. So, in addition to the door assy, I will usually anywhere from 5 to 10 other subassy withiin the top level that will also be flexible. At this point is where I begin having issues with inventor locking up when placing constraints, especially if you accidentally place a constraint and it is conflicting with another one. When that happens, I've sat and waited for an hour for the program to update the constraint, just for it to tell me the constraint is bad, and then crash shortly thereafter. I'm beginning to suspect that it may be a memory issue, but I am not sure.

How "old" is your Windows installation?

I was having the same problem with IV2009, far more crashes than as far back as I can rememeber (IV5.3!!!) So I took the bull by the horns, wiped my hard disk, installed everything again and now the stability is back to normal. It's gone from probabaly three crashes per day to 1 in 2 weeks and even then I knew I was doing something a bit naughty anyway that was asking for a crash!

I was getting a lot of disk activity and then IV2009 just disappearing.

It may well be worth leaving MemTest running overnight but I bet a nice clean Windows installation will sort it out.

Cheers,

Good point. Our IT re-ghosts (is that the right term) our hard dirves every semester and I don't see that many crashes from all our users put together.

I was having trouble on my personal machine between r2008 and 2009 and finally bit the bullet and spent most of a day cleaning it up. Aftwards Inventor was very stable.

Hey JD,

Doesnt that "Ghosting" toast your Inventor product
licensing?

I would like to do the same thing, but thought it
"killed" the softeware locking?

I'm not involved in that area - our IT department does an outstanding job of making sure everything works for us. Our licenses are retrieved over the network. I've always had too much on my plate and am happy to completely ignore this stuff for nearly 10 years now with great IT support so that I can concentrate on design work.

Thank you for providing the reproduce steps. I created a simple assembly
which contains some flexible sub assemblies(also contain flexible sub-sub
assemblies). I cannot reproduce the crash. When I place a constraint that
conflicts with another one, an error dialog "Constraint is inconsistent"
pops up. But there's no crash.

Would it possible send me one of your large assemblies such as "oven door"
with its subassy? You said you had sent crash report. Please also send me
your email address which you filled in the crash report so I can look it up.

My mail is bo.wangATautodesk.com

Thanks,

I can, it just may be a few days. Pretty hefty work load at the moment. The last time I sent a dataset, the pack and go didn't take all me fasteners, and it took me a long time to gather all the missing pieces because most of the fasteners are contained in a seperate library than the actual piece parts.

as for the pack and go issue about missing CC parts, just be sure that
"Skip Libraries" isn't checked when you pack and go. That will ensure
that your CC files are included.
