ATI Fire GL 3100

How would a Quadro FX500 (AGP) compare with an ATI Fire GL 3100 (PCIe)? I've
had good luck with Quadro cards in the past, but dell only offers one of the
higher level Quadro cards on their Precision 370.

I wouldn't have them put in a graphics card then, and just put a quadro in myself

Why do you say that? Are you just pro Nvidia? Have you used the ATI card? Is
there a big difference in performance?

Are you asking if I am a Nvidia salesman, then no... I have used a ATI card before (not the one you are looking at), and it wasn't very good, but no that is not why I suggested that. If you have had good luck with something, then I would call that a blessing, so why change it. Why let Dell tell you what to put in your machine, put what YOU want in it. What if you don't like the ATI card, then your out that $.

That's all I am saying

The Quadro FX500 and ATI Fire GL 3100 are almost identical in performance.

I currently use 2 machines, one has the ATI, the other the Nvidia and I've
had no problems with either.

Just make sure whichever one you get you set it up right.

I'd go for PCIe because you're getting a more modern interface on your
motherboard should you update the card in the future.

The FX500 isn't an option anymore. It's just what I'm used to using. I'm
trying to figure out if it's worth spending another $380 to go up to a
Quadro FX 1400 just to avoid the ATI card.

What size assemblies are you going to be working on?
If the FX500 would have done the job then the ATI should too.
Also, if it's a lot cheaper for the ATI then with the money you save you
could always upgrade the card in the future if you need to.

I haven't had any performance issues with the FX500. I just haven't
purchased anything other than a Quadro for several years. I know the ATI
should do the job, but I was hoping to hear from someone that currently uses
it to see what they think of it. Dell (IMO) should have just replaced the
FX500 with the FX540.

If I'm going into it expecting to upgrade it then I should buy the better
card. The FX1400 on it's own is ~$815.

I am using the Dell Precision 370 myself with the ATI 3100 card fitted. Its
not about 4 months old and I'm looking to get the card changed for a quadra.
The frame rate is poor in comparison to my old machine fitted with a quadra
750 XGL. Given the choose again I would pay the extra and get the better
card.

Kevin,
as you see from my signature down below, i'm using the ATI card. It is
stable and gives me no problem, but I can't say that I'm very impressed over
the performance. One of my co-workers uses the Quadro FX500 AGP4X and it
really seems to be faster.
So if the money isn't the biggest issue I would go for a Quadro card.

I have just got a 370, with a quadro fx540pci, all from dell. All went well for around 2 months, the cpu fan started to fail, now the motherboard is on its way out (error codes gallor)......
When we called dell they wouldnt come out till we ran the dell diag test. That didnt show anything so they wouldnt come out or fix it.
We then looked into the bios, and all the errors were listed there. When we told dell they quickly came out.
But Dell didnt tell us to look in the bios, just told us to run their own diag test.
Even then after all the hours wasted ( 3 reistalls of all software, drivers toolbars bla bla bla) they were only prepared to replace the parts, not, oh we are sorry for the shoddy pc and service heres a new one.

Its only cos our company has a contract with em we get stuck with them....

my opinion: You have to be crazy to buy DELL. They are expensive, U have to buy dell hardware to upgrade. No support, the list goes on.

I have had 2 dells now, both seam to be friday afternoon pc's.

They're expensive compared to what? When did you get it with the fx540? It's
not an option now.

ATI FireGL V3100 here. Seems ok. I've had quite a few crashes of IV, but then again I had them before with a NVIDIA 700 XGL (could have been 750 XGL). I think my issues are memory related (virtual memory settings not right, etc). Of course I've got to deal with IV crashing until ITcome and sort it for me.

Do you know about the registry update required for that card?

No. I looked on the Autodesk Graphics Card site and saw my drivers were up to date (for the ATI) . Didn't see any info regarding registry settings. Still on IV9 is that has any relevance to the registry updates

If you look for that card on the certification page, you'll see the
lightning bolt. scroll down and you'll find:

The lightning bolt signifies that you selected a version of Autodesk
Inventor® that is older than the version on which this certification was
completed.
An update is required. Click here to download now. With an older version of
Autodesk Inventor®, it is always okay to use a newer certification.

Actually you just aren't asking the right people. Dell will sell you the QFX 1300 with the Precision 370 it just isn't on the web page and you have to install the card yourself. Trust me, we do it all the tiime.

Bought mine 3 months ago, or so.
Word of advice, phone them you will get a better deal, and you'll get more options for g/cards.
Expensive compared with any high street pc seller.
I asked for an upgrade to 2 gig of ram, and they quoted, (for the extra gig) around £800. That is just rediculous!
Dell shmell.
