Assembly modeling slow processing speed

We're experiencing slow processing speeds when placing components in assemblies; the larger the assembly the lower the speed. our assemblies are realtively simple and given the complexity of the mechanisms Inventor appears to be designed for, you'd think that we could use it at its optimum level.
On the assembly I'm now working on, it's taking around 20 seconds to simply place a washer on a stud after both parts are constrained to one another. Surely this isn't normal.
I did discover that the graphics driver we have is not approved by Autodesk. Could that have something to do with it?
Our processors are pentium 4's, 3Ghz with 2 gig of ram. The graphics card in an Intel 82865g.

dnc,
The Intel 82865g is an integrated graphics chip. It is part of the motherboard chipset. It utilizes your existing RAM for video memory which is going to be slower than the memory of an add-in graphics card. You absolutely will get much faster performance if you get a video card and disable the one on the motherboard thru the BIOS. Personally, for a cheap upgrade the GeForce 4 Ti4200 looks like a great deal to me.

Also, look for lots of adaptive parts or sub-assemblies. Turning these off
can really speed things up.
