ASSEMBLY MIRROR

Hi all,

I just tried my first assembly mirror and I don't think it is working (at
least it dosn't look like it is)

After the mirror function is complete, my parts are scattered all over and
my constraints aren't working.

I try to reconstrain the mirrored parts and the constraints (flush and
mates) won't take.

This appears to be a bug or maybe another half finished feature.

Could someone please help?

Thank you.

Works fine here.... have you migrated the file to R8? Have you
verified the constraints in your original assembly? Id is possible to
post the assembly in question to I-C-F?

From and earlier post of mine on the IV7 board (pre IV8 board):
--------------------------
I am trying to mirror one side of an assembly to the other. These
particular pieces are all cut out of flat sheets of metal. Because there
are no flanges or anything, none of the parts need to be mirrored
(rights/lefts), they just need to be copied and perhaps reoriented on the
other side. However, IV8 doesn't seem to be able to figure this out. If I
let the program actually create new mirrored parts, everything works as
expected. Parts are in the correct position/orientation and are properly
constrained. But, when I change from "mirrored" to "reused" parts, the
whole thing breaks down. Some parts are upside down, parts are not properly
constrained, etc.

Does anybody have any suggestions or workarounds for this problem? When I
first read about this feature, I told my boss that it would be great, IF it
worked. My fear was that it wouldn't really be useable until somewhere
around IV10.

--------------------------

Like I said above, if you let it mirror EVERYTHING, it seems to work OK.
But I had the same type of constraint issues, out of position pieces, etc.,
that you described when I tried to copy parts rather than creating a mirror.
I also discovered that if I didn't also mirror the main side sheet to which
the other parts were constrained, even mirrorring everything didn't work
very well.

As a work around try setting it to "mirrored" then remove the prefix or
suffix in the naming screen.
Your result may be a little closer to you design intent.
Since some assembly constraints do not make the trip, you can use the new
"predict offset" in the place const. command to leave parts in place while
adding the assy. constraints back.
-hope this helps

I've only tried it but doesn't seem to be useful for mirroring an assembly
of the same parts if you expect to see two instances of each part in the
parts list. It makes them different parts as opposed to instances of parts
and seems to remove the possibility of modeling half then mirroring it into
a single entity. Maybe it's only good for opposite-hand new parts which,
IMWO, makes the Wow! Finley! premature at least. Haven't had a chance to
merge the files in the parts list yet, so maybe there's a workaround, but I
wouldn't think real Wow's! require workarounds.

Thanks all. I ended up mirroring the parts and constraining them in place.
It would be nice if the constraints were mirrored as well.

Thanks again.

Larry,

Did you try cycling through to the "reuse" option? You do this by clicking
on the green button with the two arrows in the mirror dialog. The next
choice is a "+" sign, which means reuse the existing components. This will
create another instance of the original component.

Hopefully this helps.

Cool ... been in that dialog but didn't think to set it like a derive.
Thanks! ... Guess it is a Wow!

Joe,

Please read my prior message in this thread concerning the "reuse" option.
I haven't had much luck getting it to create a mirrored assembly of the
pieces I select to reuse. I basically end up having to reposition and
reconstrain most of them so it isn't any easier than just placing and
constraining additional instances of the parts I already have. Please note
that the parts I have had the most trouble with are plates that may need to
be rotated 180 degrees in 2 directions to be properly positioned.

Thanks,

Blane
