No matter what I try, I can't seem to get the "Solids" selection to become active in the assembly extrude dialog.
Is there actually a way to control participants prior to creating the extrude feature?

As I recall, the intent of the assembly feature was primarily to create holes penetrating multiple parts.
I don't know that there EVER was an ability to create a solid that would span parts (what would you do at part boundaries)?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I'm referring to an extrude-cut feature.
In an assembly that contains multiple parts (that may contain multiple solids), the "Solids" selection button implies that you can select only those solids or parts that you want to participate in the feature. It is always greyed out however.
After the feature is created, youcan add/remove participants, but it would be easier to do that by multi-selecting only those solids you want to cut through.

Hi! The Solids selection button is greyed out is because the function button represent is not suitable at assembly level. I think your intent is to use it to select feature participants. However, Inventor assembly feature identify the necessary participants based on the extent of the extrusion. After the feature is created, the user can add or remove participant by right-clicking the feature.
Essentially, there is no workflow allowing user to pre-select feature participants like in multi-solid workflows at part level.
Thanks!
Hi Johnson. Thanks, you've confirmed what I was observing. So why is the "Solids" selection button even there in the assembly extrude dialog if it can never be used?

Good point! Assembly and Part share the same Extrude dialog. The available options are active depending on the context.
Thanks!
Hi,
Assembly features only cut through visible components. It makes sense once you figure it out, but it certainly isn't obvious.
