I though that this might be worth putting into the public domain because it may save you some time in the future.
As described in the previous thread, we use a number of linked Excel based parameter files in our designs.
Whilst updating a number of assemblies, following a change in the aforementioned Excel file, Inventor crashed leaving a number of 'damaged' Inventor assemblies, although the Excel file opened without any problems or errors. The assemblies could be opened if you opted not to update, although this did not solve anything.
After trying various things without success we decided to restore the Inventor files and Excel file which recovered the assembly files to the condition before the crash. Then we restored Excel file only and that worked too. Therefore the conclusion is that the fault lay with the Excel file although Inventor was intolerant of this fault.
So the lessons learned are:
If you are having problems with an Inventor assembly file linked to an Excel spreadsheet try restoring the Excel spreadsheet first.
Make sure any linked Excel spreadsheet is backed up.
