Assembly-centric design

In an assembly drawing I have created a part. I now want to reference this parts geometry to create a second part.

My only route to do this appears to be to use the 'project geometry' tool and then use the projected geometry to create my new part profile. OK so far!

However if I subsequently want to change the sketch profile for the second part by using 'edit sketch' it appears to be constrained by the projected geometry. I have disable the adaptive functionality and get no indication in the browser of a link back to the first part I created.

Is there a way of breaking this link?
Is there a way of referencing geometry from other parts in an assembly drawing without using the 'project geometry tool'?

Highlight the reference geometry, and change its type to normal. Or you can
delete the sketch constraints that reference your reference edges

Works a treat! Many thanks
This is the first time I have noticed in the line type box 'normal / reference'
