Assemblies in Libraries

Anyone ever put assemblies, like cylinders, ball screws and slides, in
library paths? If you move the cylinder from extended to retracted and save
it is extended again when you reopen, is it not? Is this not a bit of a
problem? Do you all just create the path for you cylinders as a workgroup
instead of as a library? What work arounds do you all use? I am trying to
implement IV6 and this is one of our issues as well as the new check in and
check out nightmare, but that is for another time.

I do have some assemblies in library paths, however if I want to have
driven constraints, then I would put a unique copy of the assembly and
those parts that would have driven constraints in a workgroup path.

I use assemblies in libraries sometimes, when I'm working a side project and
need to reference the assembly without accidentally making changes to the
assembly.

The thing to remember is that if it's in a library, IV will treat it as
read-only. If you need parts to change position or whatnot, you cannot use
a library path.

What problems are you having with check-out/in? About the only problem we
have is people forgetting to check stuff back in...

We will be changing over on Friday and I am just getting a little leery
about how things will work. Users here are up on IV but the project files
tend to get a little shady and with 6 it is even more so. I just see the
potential for having to modify a design when one guy is on vacation and he
"forgot" to check out the file before he left to Tahiti. It could really be
a pain when the shop department needs some drawings quick. Not to mention
you cannot override a checkout that is someone else's as far as I can tell.

That is not correct. You can override someone else's checkout, but
there can be side effects. I would suggest you go back through the
white paper on Concurrent Design that in in the Documentation folder on
the IV R6 CD. It doesn't sound like you quite have a handle on working
in the semi-isolated environment yet. I know its deep reading, however
it is essential to successful implementation. Something EVERYONE must know.

We have been using it for about three months now, largely successful,
but we have had a few surprises to deal with.

You can override another's checkout with "steal checkout" or "Cancel
Ckeckout"

Yeah, I was having a bit of a problem understanding some of the stuff but I
have found it now. Also now that I have a bit of understanding, at least
for me, it seems like it will be pretty easy to use and has a lot of
potential. When working in a semi-isolated environment do you use a main
project file and individual personal ones or do you define a workspace in
the main project and just make sure that it exists on everyone's local
machines or even on a network location, though network would seem to negate
alot of the benefits?

We have a parent Project that becomes the included file in the child
projects.
