Application Options - Hardware settings

Hello everyone,

We are having an unusual problem with our hardware settings in the Application options, whenever our computers are re-booted the hardware graphic setting always reverts to "use software graphics" everytime we must switch it back to Direct3D after a re-boot. If you don't re-boot the computers they will stay at Direct3D. I have used the export option to save these settings and then I use import to re-load my settings everytime I re-boot.

Does anyone know where this setting might be so it will always stay on the correct setting?

thanks

1. What graphics Cards & Drivers are in use?

2. Users must be at MS Power User Status to write registry changes.

We have:

Nvidia Quadro FX 3500 cards

Version 91.36

running WindowsXP X64

And I am not sure about the MS Power User Status, I am checking with our system analyst on that. I have never heard of that before is it like administrator permissions?

Additional info.... yes we do have

local Admin rights which is actually above the MS Power User Status.

If it is actually version 91.36, that's a 4 year old video driver.  I would update to the latest WHQL driver from Nvidia.  Then go to the Inventor Hardware website and get the latest graphics database for your version of Inventor.

Really no point in updating your "graphics database" as Autodesk doesn't update it anymore anyways.

That was only really needed for OpenGL.

And of course this causes the Autodesks graphics diagnostics to always reports newer WHQL certified drivers as not being WHQL.. so ignore that error.

We have seen this issue with corporate images being pushed onto machines with Inventor part of the image. If you have a new machine freshly formatted with only a windows OS put on along with MS Office then Inventor should be installed and tested in this environment under the local administrator profile. Under this environment this should not occur.

Don- We have this same issue occurring at the company I work for. We've submitted it to Autodesk product support (platinum subscriber) over a year ago and still haven't been given a fix for this We're running 2010 Inventor, XP Pro (X64) with Nvivia Quadro FX 1700 cards on Dell  T 3400's with Intel Duo core E8500 @ 3.16 GHz processors. Every day we have to change this setting to use 3d graphics hardware. If we sign out of Inventor but don't log out, it retains the setting. Reboot and you have to resert the hardware setting. Has a fix been found yet cause it's a real pain to have to keep doing every day?

and as above do you have the correct user permissions (local admin or power user) and was your system created as a corporate image as don is talking about?

I'd be submitting a support request again.. Usually they will notify you if your SR has been addressed in a hotfix or whatever but not always

Mcgyvr-

I do have appropriate Admin permissions but unfortunately I'm working on a computer with a corporate image which IT controls. Another complication here is that we have several types of desktop setups using different hardware. I have one of the more robust systems as I work with alot of large assemblies. It's a trickle down system. As power users get new equipment, their old systems get passed down the line so there are probably several images IT works with. I've heard the guys using the older 32 bit machines aren't having this problem. I realize it complicates the fix, but it represents about 3700 man-hours a year corporate wide of time spent changing the setting.

Well if Autodesk hasn't addressed the issue (and I don't know if they have or haven't ) The way I would take care of this is to simply uninstall Inventor and reinstall it on each machine locally. (I'm assuming though that the problem will go away by simply reinstalling Inventor without an image like you have done.)

Now I have a feeling you are going to come back and say well IT won't allow us to install software on our own (because you probably work in one of those companies that somehow lets their IT departments rule the world). But surely if IT (or the boss of IT) is aware that you (and evey member of your ENG staff) are spending time each and everyday fixing a problem that IS 100% caused by an IT image they would "bend" the rules to fix the situation.

First thing I (or my evil IT department if I was you) would be doing is submitting a support request again so you can start a dialog with Autodesk to see if this issue has been addressed AND to make sure that simply reinstalling Inventor locally will fix the problem.

I find it hard to believe that Autodesk hasn't addressed this or have a workaround for this situation as typically larger companies like yours might be that do image computers have alot more push with Autodesk...

Maybe all you need to do is get the required hotfixes or service pack installed

Actually mstalter and I work for the same company, back when I first started this post in 05, we have never found a solution to this problem. The work around I have is in the application settings, once I have the settings correct, I did an export and now whenever I launch Inventor the first thing I do is to import the applicationoption.xml file which sets the correct hardware setting (see attachment)

I'd still be starting a support request..

In the past 5 years have you tried to reinstall Inventor locally? I know I could only take importing the application options for about a week or so then I'd be trying something else.. To have to import the settings each day is total BS

FYI -

For all of those still on 2010 that are having this problem of always having to reset hardware settings to "Direct3D" after reboot, we finally did find the reason why. In 2009 Inventor there were a total of some 5 choices you had to select from on the hardware graphic settings page of applications options. In 2010 there were only 3 (if I recall correctly). When you selected a choice of one of the 3, say 2 for instance. Within the Inventor software, it would track 2 numbers, one for the total number of selections which was pre-set within the code (3) and one for the one you selected (2). The code actually still had (5) as the pre-set number of choices left over from rev 9 software so the end result was it wouldn't save. We notified Autodesk and I believe they were going to address the issue. We've moved to 2012 now but actually were able to finally locate the reason for the problem in 2010 and fix it.
