Another Project File Question

Thanks to all who responded to my last post. Upon further investigation, I have discovered that users have cut and pasted files from one network directory to another. What is the method to move an assembly within a project from one server to another without affecting relationships. Thanks.

You cannot not affect relationships when you move files. You can
minimize the effect it will have on relationships. Be sure to use the
UNC (Universal Naming Convention) on all paths, \\servername\foldername,
instead of using "mapped" drive letters.

The method I have had the best success with is to set the multi-user
off, open the highest level assembly in DA. Select all the
sub-assemblies (I usually do 1 or 2 subs at a time) and parts (except
library parts), use the rename operation and just change the location
(this moves the files rather than copying). After complete, I copy the
highest assembly to the new location, DA will not rename/move the
highest level assembly, only the subs and parts.

Modify the project file and open the assembly and hopefully the number
of resolve issues are minimal.

Chris,

You have to use the Design Assistant in manage mode to do things like this
but now that you have a complete mess with improperly linked/moved files,
you are going to have to use Design Assistant (or manually when opening
assemblies) to fix up all the links.

Are the Assemblies all opening without issue...with the correct parts?

me happy me not you.

Use the Design assistant.

Hey Quinn,

Yes, the parts are opening. I have been able to resolve the linking. However, I still have the workgroup parts all over the place. Here is my problem. When my project started. I had to use another server. I have since brought a server up on-line. Now I need to migrate all the files to that server. When the project opens the assembly it sees files from another drive. I need all the files on the shared network drive. How do I migrate those into the new location using DA?

Could he not move all the files back to the original location, open them to make sure
everything resolves and then move with DA?

Hal outlined it pretty well.

First off, make sure that these rouge directories are ALL listed in the
Project file.

Open the (close all windows in IV) Design Assistant off the Start
button->Programs->IV6, or in File Explorer, Right Click on an assembly and
select Design Assistant.

Now you can go ahead (in Manage mode) and specify new locations (this is how
moves are accomplished) for the parts.

Rouge? Red directories?

I meant Rogue as in "One who causes trouble"

Thanks Everyone!

Found out why DA wasn't working. DA will not allow file moves in semi-isolated environment. Change the project type to "Shared". DA moved all components and assemblies to new server. Thanks again everyone for making this concept gel!
