This can be done via the Windows API but presents some interesting
problems on sync. I had one request for sound which varies with speed
like an engine speeding up / slowing down. Not something I want to even
attempt.

Dubit from TechSmith does a wonderful job. If you buy Camtasia Suite,
you can also add transitions, sound, better compression and output to a
variety of different formats like Flash, QuickTime etc. If you are
working with AVI's you need this tool.
