%$&*! Zoom Window Tool as it applies to Printing

I have only recently begun working with Inv6 and this problem is driving me NUTS!
Assume we have a very large drawing layout with many views. Some are section details at 2:1, others are overviews of large parts at 10:1 scale. What do I do if I want to print only ONE view on this sheet to show dimension details? For some reason, Autodesk has been kind enough to get rid of the "window" option in Desktop "Plot" and replace it with a "Current Window" option. Unfortuantely, the useless Zoom Tool will not let you precisely drag an X and Y box to window ONLY to view I want to print. Instead, the Inv Zoom tool wants to be smart and proportionally open the X dimension relative to the Y dimension, or visa versa. Can anyone suggest what my option is if I want to print only one view from a drawing layout and that view ONLY? I attempted to "hide" all other views, but this option does not seem to exist.
Please help!

There was a huge discussion about this a few months back. Long story short, you
have to create a new sheet at the paper size you want, copyclip the view from
1st sheet and paste it into other sheet. Then just print 2nd sheet 1:1.

Why not use the "current window" option in the print dialog box. Just set your screen to what u want printed...??

Zoom into the area you want to print then
"print",select the "current window " option in the print dialog
box.

Thank you for the tip Dave.
My problem lies with the scaling of the views.
As soon as I go to a standard A sheet, I need to scale down
the view from 4:1 to 12:1 to get it to fit on the sheet. Unfortunately, the dimensions are NOT scaled correctly relative to the view. What I end up with after cutting and pasting is a mess with dimensions bunched together and not at all readable!
I don't understand why Autodesk chose yet again to get rid of functionality that worked extremely well in MDT.
If I am required to do this every time I need to print a drawing detail, I am simply wasting my time.

Did either J-man or David R. read the original post? He wants to not "current
window" plot.

I completely understand how the "current window" option works. What I end up with is the view I want to print, plus bits and pieces of the surrounding views. With the poor Zoom Window tool, I am unable to "select" only the view I need to print. While "current window" gives the desired result, it sure is NOT professional, particularly if you need to hand it off or fax it to someone.
Thanks!

I guess I didn't. Sorry. Looks like the only way is to use the method that
you suggested earlier.

The other option (with 2nd sheet) is to leave the sheet size the same as 1st
sheet, leave all the scales the same, Copypaste into 2nd sheet and plot "current
window". This will get rid of the "bits and pieces" of other views.

BTW, I completely agree that this is a problem with 2d IV. I would also like the
windowed plot to be a nominal scale. There are many issues with 2d, but this one
seems very easy to fix.

I, too, have been wondering how such simple &
essential functionality we had in MDT could be left out of IV. As far as I know
this is a "must have" feature for R7 for many of us trying to work faster &
better.

Make your drawing window proportional to what you want to view. Then the zoom window is the same proportion as the current graphics windows, which you just set to the proportion you want. Am I missing something? Perhaps the word precise is the problem...

Unfortunately, it is not in R7 unless that make that change after beta (highly
unlikely)

If he has many views close to each other, they show up on his plot -
Unprofessional
If he wants a precise scale, he has to drag the view he want to another sheet
(can not plot "current window" to nominal scale. IV scales it to window)- Waste
of time

ACW,

Why can you temporarily move the other views out of the window area? Print
current window, hit undo a few times (or just close without saving), and
you're done.

Hi Brian.
I guess that would work too.
But who has the time to move multiple views out of the way every time you need to print ONE view of a part?
I mean, come on Autodesk...this is BASIC software functionality and would be VERY easy to fix.
An idea: Have an option when you click on "Zoom Window".
Right click, select "precise" window, or something that would work like the MDT window command. Simple, effictive, and it would take a good software coder NO TIME to do it.

Andrew,

I understand that IV doesn't conveniently allow you
to plot a single view.

But I don't understand the following comment. Can
you please describe the behavior you want (if necessary attach a picture in
CF).

If you have a horizontally long window, how can you
zoom in on a square view in a crowded drawing without pulling in things from
surrounding views?

style="PADDING-RIGHT: 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 5px; MARGIN-LEFT: 5px; BORDER-LEFT: #000000 2px solid; MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px">.

dimension, or visa versa.

In MDT 6:

Plot-Window-Click on top left extent of view-Drag to bottom right extent of view-Click again.

This give me a window that is sized to the outermost boundaries of the selected view. It can be square or ANY shape of rectangle and is easy to define. Also, the crosshairs (if you have them turned on in preferences) make it easy to make sure you are not windowing items outside of the view you want to print.

In Inventor 6:

Zoom Window-Click on top left extent of view-Drag to open window-Click when desired window is shown-Print-Current Window

The result is a window that is FAR lager than the selected view. If I have a view that is VERY wide (2000mm) but only
200mm tall, how do I window this precisely? As I try to open the window to fit the large width of the view, the "height" is also increased in some strange proportion. What I end up with is a window that it far too tall for the view I am trying to select. The cross-hairs are not really crosshairs at all. They don't define the center OR one of the corners of the window and as such are very non-intuitive to use.

Obviously, if I have other views within the bounds of a window placed around my view in MDT6, they will appear in the print. However, if you are used to setting up a drawing layout in a manner where multiple views do not interest with a window drawn around any other view, then at least MDT6 will allow you to window only ONE view.

Does that make sense?

drag it to a second sheet so that view is all by its self but still in the drawing package

Print 1:1 to a PDF and crop the view you want. A little extra effort but it works like a charm and very professional. Besides, I would not look at it as lost functionality because it was never in IV to begin with. It does not matter if it was in another CAD package. (I know it needs to be there but come on) We have had to work around this from the birth of IV. - ed -
