adaptive coil ?

Is a coil something that cannot be made adaptive? I have a screw auger flight that I need to use over and over again, but at differing lengths. After I created the coil, I went to change the feature to adaptive, and RMB does not find that option. I thought a spring could be made adaptive, or is that one of those things that really doesn't look right?
Is there a way to do this properly or not?

Thanks for your help,

You have to create an adaptive Workplane and reference it into the
sketch/parameters so that as the Workplane is constrained to different
conditions, its "value" changes the coil feature.

There have been several examples posted.

I HAVNT DONE IT FOR A WHILE BUT YOU CAN CREATE A SPRING USING 2 ADAPTIVE PLANES THAT DRIVE THE SPRING DIMENSIONS, IM NOT SHOUTING JUST CANT BE BOTHERED TO RETYPE THIS IN LOWERCASE ;0)

Ok and thanks guys - I guess i'll go back to learning mode again and do a search on exactly how to do this.

Thanks again for sending me in the right direction.

I just hate to think of you writhing in pain trying to figure it out.

This is a R10 backup part I had laying around.

The extra coils are just for looks not a necessity so try to not let them
confuse you.

The main point is that the workplane is projected into the first sketch and
a reference dim (Base_Height) is created so it can be used to control the
length of the coil.

To use the part in an assy, simply constrain the lower side of the spring
(which is the XZ Origin Plane) to a base part and constrain the adaptive
plane to a moving part then simply adjust the distance between the base and
moving parts.
(the Y Origin Axis is the Centerline)

there's about 3 ways to do this. one is the mutli segmented coil assembly someone has laying around, another would be an adaptive workplane driving the height of the coil, and then you can do it with an adaptive sketch with a driven dimension that drives the height of the coil

Thanks for the replies, guys, but these all seem to change the height of each coil, and what I need is to change the number of coils as the length changes, so as to keep the individual coil height the same. Maybe what I need is not adaptive, but just copy each time I need another length and renumber. Then revise the feature on the new part to get the coils I need. I just thought what a neat way to make 1 drawing and use it over and over.

Thanks, Smoky IV10-SP3a

make a skeletal assembly paterning the spring so that the number of occurances updates as the length changes, ive done a few with ladder rungs but may be a bit tricky working out the cut off points for the spring lengths

I have attached an assembly, done in IV9, that uses an assembly to do
something like you have stated. I have started each of the parts by
deriving another part with only a length parameter, though you can have as
many parameters in it as you need. When the length parameter is changed in
the Part Parameter.ipt and the assembly updated the shaft and screw length
change together. Take a look and see if this helps out or at least gets
some ideas flowing for ya. This is similar to linking a spread sheet only I
have found it to be much more stable.

This is very interesting. I never thought of doing something like this before. I see you created a length custom parameter in the otherwise blank part PartParameter.ipt and use it to drive the length of all the parts. This is quite ingenious. I think I can use this quite well, thank you. And maybe become more used to coming up with creative solutions by inspiration from this.

Thanks again, Smoky IV10-SP3a

Why can I not modify the length parameter? I tried closing all the parts and the assembly and opening only the PartParameters.ipt and then I go into the iProperties box and under custom, I try to modify length property, only to have it return as soon as I am done. It seems to change, but as soon as I say apply and done, I go back to it and it is 20.000 again, even tho I just changed it to 24.000. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

Never mind... I found it. You created it through the parameters (fx icon) thing, and I was able to change it there.

Thanks again

Control your coil through pitch and height rather than revlution and height. Does that work?
