3D Sketch vs Sweeps

In Inventor R11, SP2 why :

(1) Why can't you use the Sweep command with a 3D sketch?

(2) Why can't you draw circles in the 3D sketch environment? What do you do if you need to sweep a cut with a circular profile along a 3D sketch line?

Thanks,

MIke

1) I can and here is an example http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/content/DSG322/Inventor%20Tutorials/Inventor%2011%20Tutorial%207.pdf

2) A circle is a planar (2D) object - don't need a 3D sketch.
See above tutorial for 2nd part of question. You can create a workplane anywhere along a sweep path for the profile( or use one of the base workplanes if appropriate).

Can you post your file.

Thanks for the info. The tutorial uses knot.ipt. Can I download this file somewhere?

Here is the file.
Of course you should also try recreating the sketches on your own. This one is simple sketches.
And you can also use Included edges from existing solids in the 3D sketch path. This particular tutorial doesn't demonstrate that functionality. 3D sketches can also be used for complex curve driven feature patterns (the Rectangular Pattern is really a misnomer - it can do much more than rectangular patterns). Post what you have so far if you have trouble with your design.

I've been away from the Inventor Group for a while but it has always been customary / required of us to post files in CF. Is that still true?

No, a while back they changed the forum such that there is no compelling reason to post in CF.
Now if they would up the limit to say 5Meg over there and lower say 70k primarily for jpg here....

Right now only r10 & r11 are available but r2008 AIP should be available any day now. An edu email is required but those without an edu email can request a guest registration - that is one of the ways I recruit HS students.

Mike,
I didn't spend a lot of time analyzing your model primarily because it seemed to really bog down my machine and did not look like an actual part but rather something you were experimenting with.
A couple of quick things I did notice. A triangle is a 2D planar object so do as a 2D sketch. Always go for the simple solution.
When you thicken a surface that is not planar the edges are not planar so a sweep of the triangle is probably not going to give you the geometry you want. I would do a Loft using the two edges as rails.
Whenever I run into a part that seems to really slow down I start trying diffferent methods to achieve the same geometry without the slowdown.
You might check out these parts, particularly the Seat. Some of the parts I modeled at least a half a dozen ways - not because my first attempt didn't work but because I was not satisfied that I had found the mose efficient method.
http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/SpyGadget/HammerHead_Mather.zip
Some of the parts I would do over if I had the time. You can probably tell which ones.
Also if you are just experimenting to see what kind of complex geoemtry you can create you might want to go through these tutorials first
