3d sketch dimensioning

Is there a way of dimensioning a 3D line in a certain plane? I have a line <3i,2j,5k> and want to dimension the j component only instead of the overall length. I've been creating a plane on the initial point and dimensioning the second point to that but I was wondering if there was an easier way.

Generally, 3D line dimesion is the true distance between the two end points
on the line. If you want to dimension with different components, you need to
either create a workplane or make the origin workplanes invisible. Then
dimension by selecting the point and a workplane.
I think what you have been doing is correct.

Sorry to bring this post out of the mothballs, but the ability to dimension a 3D sketch point to a work plane is new to me.

I've done some experimenting (IV2009), and it doesn't appear possible to dimension a skew line to an origin or work plane (to control the absolute angles from horizontal, vertical, etc). I know Inventor can figure the angle, because the measure angle tool brings up the correct number instantly.

Is there a method to accomplish this that I'm missing, or is this functionality still not available? I know how to accomplish this with 2D Sketches, but I'm testing to see if a 3D sketch alone can control geometry in this manner.
