3d DWG to IPT

I have some 3d DWG files (which for some reason the content type is not allowed to attach), and I'd like to convert them to IPT files for use in Inventor. I tried exported to IGES, but when I try to open the exported IGES file, Inventor hangs and I have to give it the ol' Vulcan nerve pinch & restart it.

It would seem to me there has got to be an easy way to do this...

I'm using Inv Suite 2009 SP1.

Thanks!

Thanks JD. The links didn't work (because of the long link name auto-inserted ellipsis) but I was able to search for the AUGI article.

So I am able to open the 3D DWG file in INV, How do I convert it to a 3D solid IPT file?

If it is a solid DWG it will automatically be a solid in Inventor.
If it isn't solid DWG, zip and attach here for further instuction or shell out $190 on the second link.

Another issue this morning - while trying to convert a MDT dwg file, I get a message box that says "Mechanical Desktop Part/Assembly translator not registered."

I have the translators loaded in tools>add-ins, so I'm not sure what this means or haw to fix it.

Any suggestions?

"it is a solid DWG it
will automatically be a solid in Inventor. If it isn't solid DWG"

Not quite.... Select the Options in the File open dialog after
selecting the file and set it to IMPORT. Then on the 3d page of the Import
Wizard be sure that 3D Solids in the upper left corner is checked.

You must have MDT installed and open to translate. Do not have
the file open in MDT. Then use Import options in IV. IV will take care of the
rest. I will have a tutorial on Translating MDT completed by the end of the
month.

INV Suite 2008 was bundled with MDT. INV Suite 2009 only has AutoCAD Mechanical, not MDT. The import wizard recognizes the file as a MDT file, but then won't let me import it. So much for legacy drawings - and these are 3rd party.

There has GOT to be an easy way to do this

Does this mean I have to install MDT from the INV 2008 bundle? I'm gonna run out of drive space...

You can install the MDT from the 2008 bundle. I believe you should have also received instructions on where to go online for a copy of MDT2009 (which is recommended).

You do need an installed MDT in order to import MDT files. The installed MDT also has to be the last AutoCAD based product run on your machine. I recommend starting it up and then firing off your import in Inventor.

You'd think it would be listed under "downloads" in the subscription center. Alas, it isn't. Anyone know where the link for MDT 2009 is?

Last time I needed to download MDT 2009 a trivially easy Google search turned up the download url. I haven't checked recently.

I'm not sure if this will help . . . . but here goes. I had a difficult concetina part to create . . . . . radii, angles etc. I couldn't sketch in Inventor. Had to draw it in Autocad (2d) copy and pasted into Inventor ( sketch mode )

 Thanks JD Mather,
I was just answering mooresk257's question for a simple way. I'm better at Autocad than Inventor. I just created a 2d sketch in Autocad and pasted into a 2d sketch document in Inventor. Worked fine. Should also work in 3d if mooresk257
pastes it in a 3d sketch in Inventor. . . . . easy.
My problem is how to make the concertina part work like you would a spring. I've seen a tutorial in solidworks but not Inventor.
Any ideas?

You did not answer the questioin with an easier way of opening an AutoCAD 3D in Inventor - I suspect your technique is actually much more work - that is why I requested your file that you think is easier to sketch with AutoCAD.

Also, this is a very old thread - I suspect the OP had solved the problem by now.
