3D dimension

I would like to measure a distance between a workplane and a parallel
workaxis and make this into a parameter [which is preferably but not
necessarily editable]. How can I do this? I tried constructing a workplane
running through the workaxis, perpendicular to the workplan, in order to
attach the desired dimension there.. but it won't work with an empty sketch.
~ I've considered making a sketch there, constraining it to the 3D model
and -then- adding the dimension.
But I consider there must be a much more straight forward solution to this?

Adding a sketch in the plane where I want to have the dimension doesn't
work! I have projected the desired project-geometry but I get an
errormessage [they call it Inventor tip?] saying: cannot constrain or
dimension reference of fixed geometry.
Someone please help.. why can't I seem to add this measurement to my
parameters?? In helpfiles I can only find dimesions in 2D sketches, does
this mean that is the -only- place where I can dimension and deduce
parameters?

Have you tried adding the line, but only
constraining one endpoint.

Then add a driven dimension and finally constrain
the other endpoint.

This should allow you to use the driven dimension
as a parameter.

I had tried that before I posted.. but it gave me
the same 'error' still.

BUT after your suggestion I thought I'd try again
and now I found out that somehow it -won't work- if I draw the line from
endpoint to endpoint [giving the error] and it DOES work if I draw the line from
endpoint to midpoint [giving me the option to add a driven dimension] AND That
will do just fine for me!

so Thanx a lot!

It's silly but sometimes it lets you add a driven
dimension to a fully constrained sketch and other times it won't.

Create a workplane through the axis and perpendicular to the worklane. Make
a sketch on the second workplane, project both axis and first workplane.
Draw a line from anywhere on the first projection perpendicular to the
second projection. Add a dimension to the line you just draw, it will warn
you it will be a driven dimension. The dim will show up in your parameters.

jep.. that's exactly what I tried.. and exactly the situation in which I get
the 'error' and -not- a driven dimension. But no worries, if you read the
thread you can see I've solved it with a little help from RuiF. So now I
have in fact what you propose although I needed to do a silly slightly
diverted drawmethod [drawing the sketch not directly from point to point but
attaching one endpoint afterwards]

thanx anyway 😉
