If you have a serial Spaceball, rotate a model with it, then rotate the model with the F4/LMB/mouse combination. The difference in the smoothness of the motion is noticeable, but not extremely large. I used to have a USB Cadman (my favorite 3D motion controller, BTW), and motion from it was nearly the same as a F4/LMB/mouse motion.
I was told or I read (can't remember) that it's because the serial port is only capable of 128kbps max while the USB is capable of, what, 1.5Mbps (12x faster)?
The serial model isn't stuttering, hiccuping, or anything - it's just not quite as smooth as its USB counterpart. Certainly not worth the price differential to get a USB model IMHO.

Date rate is faster? Maybe, but I have never had any hiccups or delay with a serial model.
