3D controllers

Where is the best place to get one of the 3D controllers? I have looked at 3Dconnexion but I would have to buy this out of my pocket not the company. And, I don't think they would do this. I have checked eBay but don't see many there only the serial one's if you are lucky. Can I hear some experiences with them also to help decide which one I should get. I mainly use IV and some SW. I appreciate everyone's respnces. Thanks JeffO

What's wrong with the serial ones? Don't have a serial port? Get a serial card for $10. You can pick up a 2000 series spaceball for under $50. -- Sean Dotson, PE Autodesk Inventor Certified Expert http://www.sdotson.com http://www.sdotson.com/forums/ Check the Inventor FAQ for most common questions www.sdotson.com/faq.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------- "JeffO" wrote in message news:40867ef9_3@newsprd01... > Where is the best place to get one of the 3D controllers? Search eBay for "Spaceball". I currently find 25 for sale. There's nothing wrong with the serial models. The USB models do work a little better in that the data rate is faster. It sounds like our company was in the same boat as yours. I had pushed to get Spaceballs for every workstation, but when purchasing found out that they ran $500 each new they about lynched me. When I told them I could grab up a bunch of them at $25 a piece they loosened the noose a bit. You can get an IBM 6094-030 Spaceball for $24.99 from aerospace_surplus (he's currently selling three), and they work just fine with Inventor (provided you have the 3.5.0 build 15 version of the driver). I've bought 18 of them from him so far. He's reputable. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brian R. Date rate is faster? I have 2 4000's from Ebay $120 and $125. Both serial, both work excellent - can't do without them. -- Cory McConnell Autodesk Inventor Certified Expert www.mechanixdesigns.com

You all are talking about the #Dconneion one's right? I just checked eBay and saw some IBM spaceballs also. Are you all using some of those? I only knew of the connexions models. Watch out. There's some dodgy USBs about that are unsupported by 3Dconnexion. Duncan "JeffO" wrote in message news:40867ef9_3@newsprd01... > Where is the best place to get one of the 3D controllers? If you have a serial Spaceball, rotate a model with it, then rotate the model with the F4/LMB/mouse combination. The difference in the smoothness of the motion is noticeable, but not extremely large. I used to have a USB Cadman (my favorite 3D motion controller, BTW), and motion from it was nearly the same as a F4/LMB/mouse motion. I was told or I read (can't remember) that it's because the serial port is only capable of 128kbps max while the USB is capable of, what, 1.5Mbps (12x faster)? The serial model isn't stuttering, hiccuping, or anything - it's just not quite as smooth as its USB counterpart. Certainly not worth the price differential to get a USB model IMHO. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brian R. That would be the 4000 FLX model. They were never actually released, but somehow some of them leaked out and were for sale on eBay et al. Avoid. "Duncan Anderson" wrote in message news:40868497$1_2@newsprd01... > Watch out. There's some dodgy USBs about that are unsupported by 3Dconnexion.

They are just rebranded. The company has changed hands a few times but they are all the same. You find HP, Compaq, IBM, Spatial etc... Just to clarify it's the 4000FLX USB models that you should avoid. The serial ones are fine.
