260 Character Vault limitation

Has anyone worked theirselfs into a position where folder names in the vault are too long, thereby making it so that you cannot manipulate files within Vault explorer. How do you shorten the folder name once the filename string exceeds 260 characters? I would think that we're not the first to encounter this problem. Using Inventor 11 SP2 and Vault 5.

Thank you,

Andrew Grove

For faster response, you might try reposting in the Vault group.

Windows max file name is 255 characters, folder names should follow the same
limits. Seen simular problems with Java which will support 260 character
file names. No know workaround for this problem as you are at the limits of
the OS.

It appears that Vault is appending some character string to the filename. The error that we are encountring only happens when an attempt is made to manipulate data inside of Vault explorer (copy design, rename or move). When we use Word to count the character length of a file that is causing problems within vault, the filename length including folder path is less than 260 characters.

As Dennis's post, the Vault user forum would best fit this topic.

I got the same problem.

Is there a way to find where in vault the 260 caracters is exceeding?

I want to made a get latest version of an old project (3 years old).

I don't understand how it's work at the time we install the files in the vault & now nothing is working!

Yes.  The Vault uses the temp folder or at least used to.  When you perform renames, copy design, etc. it will append the characters from the temp folder so you might want to try shortening the temp folder location.  You might want to try this if you have not already:

Here is the process for changing the location of the temporary folders, let me know if you have any issues setting this up.

1. Create a folder at the root of the local drive and name it TEMP.
2. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
4. Click Environment Variables.
5. Repeat the following steps for both the TEMP and the TMP User variables: a.  In the User variables list, select the TEMP variable, and then click Edit.
b.  In the Variable value box, type %drive%\TEMP, and then click OK.

Note %drive% is the local drive where you created the folder in step 1.
c.  Repeat steps a and b for the TMP variable, if it exists.

6. Repeat the following steps for both the TEMP and the TMP System variables: a.  In the System variables list, select the TEMP variable, and then click Edit.
b.  In the Variable value box, type %drive%\TEMP, and then click OK.

Note %drive% is the local drive where you created the folder in step 1.
c.  Repeat steps a and b for the TMP variable, if it exists.

7. Click OK two times to close the System Properties dialog box.

I use the Long Path Tool to overcome this problem. Should work for you too.
