STEP File Import issue

I am having an issue in importing a step file in Inventor Professional 2017.

It throws an error and doesn't translate the file correctly.

The STEP file is attached. I have no chance to analyze the error.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Where ever you got that step file from, I would go back and see if it can be recreated.

Hmm. That seems to be problem for Autodesk.

I could import it into Rhino. I saved it from there to STEP, IGES, SAT, x_t and 3dm.

None of these files could be imported successfully to Inventor, Fusion360, or ACADM.

I tried it on older version and it crashed Inventor as well.

Maybe @johnsonshiue would be interested in looking at this file?

Well I wish I had something impressive to report, but I merely opened the file and Save As *.stp in Creo.

I also tried SolidWorks - but it wasn't anything that could be worked with (only end face from one end).

Thank you so much for all the replies.

The original model was built in Parasolid kernel.

I tried in number of different modellers, successful in SolidEdge, Creo, NX, but failed in Inventor and SolidWorks.

Is there any settings that I can tweak to import the model in Inventor?

Unfortunately, we are not supposed to use Creo to convert the model.

Hi! I took a look at this case. Inventor seems to have problem generating the spline faces. It is possible the input geometry has problems or Inventor could not handle the geometry properly. I will forward this case to the project team for further investigation.

In the meantime, could you export the model as a Parasolid file? Inventor can read Parasolid file directly. Does it work better?

Many thanks!

Johnson,

Thank you so much for taking this into investigation.

I'm also having a look if the original geometry has problems as it's highly precise model, but couldn't find anything yet.

I'm quite suspicious about STEP translator in Inventor because many of other modelers are having no problem.

Also the Parasolid files are read correctly in other modelers but not in Inventor.

Please find the attached file for your information.

Thanks for your effort again!

I'm probably too late to be of any help to you, but got curious and this is what I did.

(This all took a bit of fumbling, understand)

Opened the step in Rhino. Exploded and deleted all the surfaces after extracting the bounding wires. Rebuilt the heart shaped wire from degree 29 to degree 11 (max Rhino allows) then did a sweep2 along the spiral rails.

Ray,

Thank you so much for your effort.

I built the model more or less the same way you did.

I was using Parasolid kernel to generate the 'wire' (actually a gear tooth profile) and sweep with the spiral angle.

Unfortunately, we are not suppose to do manual work by using Rhino or other modelers.

Maybe I have to find a way to optimize the degree of precision of the profile.

I'm looking forward to having a solution from Inventor in any case....

Thanks again for your help!
