UI Tools: Automatically Update Model? Doesn't

I'm trying to get my first UI Tools project running. The UI appears and initializes correctly, but when I change a value, it doesn't update. I've set Automatically Update Model? = True on the UiProject. When I edit a parameter, it shows the pencil icon in the 3rd column, but doesn't apply the changes. The model functions as expected with the Part Editor.  What am I missing?

Can anyone help me out here? What does the pencil icon mean?

If Automatically Update Model? = True, shouldn't parameter changes take effect immediately? If I close my ui and restart it, the pencil icon remains next to the modified parameter, but no update 

If I want to apply changes manually (Automatically Update Model? = False), what's the typical procedure for that?

Anyone have some examples?
