Querying Content Center's database

I want to build a form app that will query Content Center's database to produce a list of models for the user to coose from for the purpose if inserting in to the active assembly. I've never written an app to connect/query a Microsoft SQL Server database before. I'd like to do it in VB.NET 2008 Express but I could also do it in VB6. Can someone please give me a little advice/direction?

I am curious about this as well.

Is there a way to query the Content Center database from an external application?

Or is it stored in "flat files" (e.g. .xls)?

Edit:

Not to deviate to far from the original poster's question...

We currently use Vault Pro 2015. Would that make the above possible? (if it isn't possilbe using a local Inventor install)
