How do I tell if a solid is above or below a plane?

Not looking for specifics just a command or two that I can toy with.  I was hoping that a solid has a CG property but I can't find one.  Basically after performing a split I need to identify which new solid of which I need to change the color.  I want to be able to determine if the new solid is inside or outside of a surface.

I figure if I can start by IDing the cg (or any other aspect of the solid not on the cutting surface) and a point on the surface I can use some logic to determine the relative position.
