how do I get or flip the normal vector of a face/surface?

When I perform a split command the 2 solids created seem to be arbitrarily numbered.  Meaning, that closest to the origin is first in the two new solids created.  While the solid being created first follows uniformly for a given surface, the pattern does not follow when using a different surface. My guess is that this is related to the surface normal.  I have no idea how to get or change the surface normal.
