Are occurences in Inventor like Xrefs in AutoCAD? Or are they in some subtle way different?

Hi oransen,

I think this is a good comparison. The   inventor assembly contains the  occurrence information (file, path, transformation etc) only. It does not contain the geometry of the occurrence. When the assembly is opened, it tries to resolve the occurrence, after that, read the geometries and display them in the assembly context with the transformation defined with the occurrence. The occurrence is actually a proxy of the original document. If the original file cannot be found, Inventor will ask the user to resolve. So it may be OK to say some behaviors are similar to Xref.

I’d suggest you refer to wiki help of Autodesk to compare further on what you are interested in.
