I have installed a trial version of 3Ds Max Design on a few pc's.

 

Will Max Design work as a network render engine for 3Ds Max (not design)?

No, there are two separate plugins for Max and Max Design.

See http://download.autodesk.com/us/systemdocs/pdf/backburner2011_install_guide.pdf (Pg 37).
