vista and xphome

Hi, maybe not the right forum to ask, I'll try anyway.

My old pc runs on XPhome, contains all of my drawings, blocks etc.
Got a new Laptop from the company running windows Vista.

Connected both via a router.

Whatever I've tried the last few weeks, I just can't access my old
computer from the laptop side.

Internet access from both: ok
I can access the laptop from my old computer, can copy, move, edit and
delete files on the laptop.
I've tried with firewall, without firewall, no success.
Netbios is set automatic on both.
TCPIP(4) is present, just as is file and printer sharing.
Workgroup is the same.
All I get is \\computer is not available. Check your rights.
It is shown in the network tree.

Ofcourse I can go to the basement, copy the files I need to the laptop
and than work on but that's not the idea is it?

Can anyone shine a light on this issue?
I've checked all options I could find so far.

Regards,
Jan

do they have similar IP addresses when on your home network, and is file sharing enabled on the old pc, ie are the relecvant folders set up as shared foldes.
have you done the home network setup thing where you take a usb stick around all the network machines to set up the network.
is the network name the same on both machines.

On your old computer, make sure you have the Guest Account enabled. This is
what is used to allow remote users to login.

Very weird, since the introduction of the Guest account it is advised to
disable it since it has serious security flaws.
On top of it, if I share a folder (without password) why would I need
remote users to login?

Will give it a try though.

With Windows Professional, you can use a domain name server to login and get
permissions. With Home versions, users login to a PC, not to a domain, so
there's no way to validate credentials.

Any session accessing your PC must login, whether local or remote. It's
just the way Windows works.

Your Administrator account must also have a password for this to work. Blank password will not allow a connection for XP SP2. You will need to have user accounts on both machines that match. Share the drive/folder and give your shared access control to the everyone user as well. It helps if they are both on the same workgroup name. Furthermore, it is easier if you try to connect via \\192.168.1.xx rather than NetBIOS name. Turn off your Windows Firewall and any 3rd party firewall.
