unexpected exit on file open and no communication center connection

IV crashes when I open a file (or try to create a new file).  AutoCAD does not.  Both products always show (when selecting the communications center):

"The Communication Center Cannot be accessed due to a problem with your internet connection or with an AutoDesk server"

before IV crashes.  If IV starts and the Communication Center can be accessed then IV will not crash on file open.  The problem usually goes away if I reboot my computer.  I have installed DL17369034 and DL18361047 hotfixes related to file fails to open or unexpect exit on file open.

In my experience, Inventor crashing on File > Open is most often video card related.  What version of Inventor are you running and what is your Video Card / Driver version?

Hi! Thanks for the tip.  Here are my spec's

IV Pro 2011 64bit SP2; Win7 Ultimate SP1
ASUS MB Intel i5-3450 @ 3.10 GHz, 8GB RAM
Onboard Intel HD Graphics Driver Ver. 9.17.10.2932

I recently updated the driver.  I think I had the problem even before I updated the driver.

It's almost certainly your video card.  Inventor requires a more sophisticated video card, rather than an onboard shared video.  You might be able to go into your applications options and turn off everything.  Go out and buy a decent video card thats on the approved video card list.  That should get you going.

Thanks Travis Nave,

I switched to my other graphics card on the same computer:

ATI AMD Radeon HD 6600 Series, 1GB RAM

My driver checks as being up-to-date.

I still have the problem.

Why would it crash if I the communication center is unaccessible?  If I can solve that problem maybe the file open crash will stop.

I find that before the file open crash happens the search bar will also error.

I tried to disable the communication center using a reg edit.  The edits had no affect.  The com ctr works when it works and when it doesn't, IV crashes on file open.  If I could solve the comm ctr problem maybe the file open / crash problem would be solved as well.

You might try this hotfix:

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=18361047&linkID=9242019

Also, your Radeon card is not certified for Inventor 2011.  It still could pose a problem.

Thanks.  I have installed that hot fix as well as another (see my initial post).

My AMD Radeon 6600 supports  Open GL 4.1  A new graphics card is a large investment for me.

My work-around right now is to reboot my computer.  This usually clears the problem.

Is there any OS settings or software that could be affecting this?

Is there any way to test if it is the video card without buying a new one.  This is an intermittent problem.  It happens once every week or so.

I have a sign on my desk that reads, "ATI = Always Trashes Inventor."

I suspect the video card.

This may not apply to an intermittent issue. However, below are some suggestions you may want to look at.

One setting you may need to verify is located in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display.

  • Verify that you have your settings set to 100%.
  • Also, check that the Set Custom Text (DPI) settings are set to 100%.

You may consider modifying the settings in the Hardware tab of the Application Options. Will Inventor open a workspace while in Compatibilty mode or with Software graphics enabled?

You may find other suggestion to maximize performance in Inventor (and Windows) in the below link.

http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticl...

Last, you may also want to verify that this is not a conflict with your anti-virus software. Do you have exceptions created in your anti-virus software for Autodesk Inventor?

Thanks,
