Unable to retrieve license from NLM on Ubuntu

The box that my previous NLM was running on has died (a windows machine), so I've transferred to another server that's running ubuntu (I've grabbed an updated lic file with the new machines hostname / mac address too). Everything seems to be running fine on the new machine, but the client's can't connect to retrieve a license.

Here's the successful bootup of lgmrd:

14:44:05 (lmgrd) adskflex using TCP-port 2080
14:44:26 (adskflex) TCP_NODELAY NOT enabled

I've checked the firewall logs and can see the incoming connections from the clients, I've opened 2080 and 27000-27009 on the firewall. The system is 32 bit (it's fairly old hardware) running Ubuntu 10.04 so I shouldn't need the IPv6 update, should I?

When the clients say they can't find the license server I point them to the IP address of the server (it's all part of the same lan setup) but they eventually just time out again - any thoughts as to what might be happening?

Use the ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE system environment variable and potentially the FLEXLM_TIMEOUT one too.

Also double check connectivity with PING and make sure that you get an IPv4 response.  You can also check port numbers with Internet Explorer (not 3rd party) by placing your servername and port numbers in the address bar:

http://games-server:2080

http://games-server:27000

You should receive a jargon response similar to this:

Wê-60Wê-60Wê-60Wê-60Wê-60Wê-60Wê-60

If you get a 'page cannot be displayed' error, then your ports are blocked.

If all else fails, try deleting your CascadeInfo.cas file and try relaunching.

For more detailed information about the CascadeInfo.cas file, please refer to the Autodesk Support Knowledge Base article found here:

I've set the ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE variable, the timeout was already set up.

I get an IPv4 IP back from ping (and IPv6 is completely disabled on the server) and both IE checks returned the jargon responses and I deleted the cascadeinfo file earlier today.

Still no licenses being returned.

Are you getting any kind of Flexnet error number from your clients?  What is your TIMEOUT set to?  Start at one-million.

The timeout is set to a million and the clients eventually error out with "A valid license could not be obtained by the network license manager." and error code 0.0.0.

It takes 5 or so retries of telling it the host name for the license server before it finally gives up the ghost and provides the error message.

0.0.0 usually indicates either a problem with:

1.  The CascadeInfo.cas file

2.  The licensed product doesn't match the server

3.  The date/time on the server doesn't match the date/time on the client.

Since you mentioned that your server is ancient, make sure that the date, time, time-zone, and proper daylight saving time setting is set correctly on the server and matches the client connecting to it.

The date and time match fine, I've had that issue pop up before so that was the first thing I checked.

I had a brief eureka moment at 2 when I realised that I may have gotten a license file for the 2011 suite rather than the 2012 so went ahead and made sure that was right via register.autodesk.com, it's definitely listing 2012 licenses as being issued now but no luck with actually getting it to provide one for use.

Since the service changed to 2012, you might try deleting the CascadeInfo.cas file again and seeing if it connects.  Are there any debug errors being listed from the server for any kind of denial?

It's not generated a new CascadeInfo.cas file since I deleted the original and the log output from the server is completely empty beyond the following:

10:55:12 (lmgrd) adskflex using TCP-port 2080
10:55:44 (adskflex) TCP_NODELAY NOT enabled

No connections or attempts to connect show up.

So one machine was able to retrieve a license successfully, so I over-wrote the cascadeinfo file of another machine with the new one and it seems to be working fine now. Not at all sure what's happened to fix it, or even what broke, but it does for now seem to be ok. (touching wood)

Thanks for the update.  Copying the CascadeInfo.cas file from another computer does work.  But it should only be done if the other computer has the same set of Autodesk applications installed.  Good job!

Can someone provide a tutorial (or point me to one) for setting up NLM on Ubuntu?  I am completely new to Ubuntu, so it may need to begin at a fairly rudimentary level.

I am running a desktop version (12.04.3).  I assumed I would not need a server version, given NLM runs on non-server versions of Windows.  Correct me if I have already gone astray there.

Thanks for any help you can give.
